“I Got Myself A Workin’ Man
~ Alberta Hunter ~”

I had to laugh at that one. I had a black lady who worked for me 20 years ago.

All of the females were discussing men, marriage, houses, cars, everything, as usual.

This black lady said, I want a BMW!” Everyone looked at her in amazement. She then said, with a smirk on her face, “Black Man Workin’.” ;-)

ROCKUMENTARY: OCTOBER 3, 1959

Cue the Rockumentary theme on Turntable #2!

The San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

#5: Lloyd Price: “I’m Gonna Get Married”

Born in 1933, he was a Louisiana boy and grew up in a suburb of New Orleans. He had formal musical training in trumpet and piano, sang in his church’s gospel choir, and was a member of a combo in high school.

When Art Rupe of Specialty Records came to New Orleans scouting for talent and heard Price’s song, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” he wanted to record it. Because Price didn’t have a band, Rupe hired Dave Bartholomew and his band, which included Fats Domino on piano, to do the arrangements and back up Price in the recording session. The song turned out to be a massive R&B hit. Price continued making records for Speciality but didn’t chart any further hits.

In 1954 he was drafted and ended up in Korea. When he returned home, he found he had been replaced by Little Richard on Specialty’s roster. Adding insult to injury, his former chauffeur, Larry Williams, was also recording for Specialty, having released “Short Fat Fannie.” It was a bad time for Lloyd.

So Lloyd formed KRC Records. The first single was “Just Because,” which was picked up by ABC-Paramount, and from 1957 to 1959 he recorded a series of national hits on that were successful adaptations of the New Orleans sound: the immortal “Stagger Lee”, “Personality” and “I’m Gonna Get Married.”

In later years he nourished the early career of Wilson Pickett.

#33: The Fireflies: “You Were Mine”

They were white boys from Long Island. Unlike many of their doo-wop contemporaries, they could actually play their own instruments! This was their biggest success.

#4: The Everly Brothers: “Til I Kissed You”

Most of the brothers’ material came from Felice and Bourdleaux Bryant, but Don Everly wrote this one. Take a look at the names of the musicians in this session, some of the greatest names in country music: Chet Atkins, Sonny Curtis, Lightnin Chance, Jerry Allison and Floyd Cramer.

#15: Jerry Wallace: “Primrose Lane”

Jerry Wallace (1928-2008) charted nine hits that were country crossovers into pop, and his country music career alone charted 35 hits. Catch the harpsichord in the arrangement.

#3: The Browns: “The Three Bells”

The subject matter comes from Edgar Allen Poe by way of Edith Piaf, but this tune puts a religious gloss on it.

The group consisted of Jim Ed Brown and his sisters Maxine and Bonnie. Their sound was a mix of country and pop with a touch of Nashville. They were elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
