I would suppose that a lot of WOF watchers are older people who like seeing a familiar face.
I rarely watch it except in passing (Sajak was a familiar face here in Nashville as he did the weather on the NBC affiliate back in the ‘70s). I remember back when contestants were forced to spend their winnings on junky crapola on display with the camera panning back and forth. They wouldn’t let you just go home with the money.
