Staples, the largest office products company in the United States, will close all of its stores on Thanksgiving Day this year. Instead, the retailer will offer its customers online-only deals on the holiday and then reopens stores at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season.
The company said in a statement Thursday that customers and employers should enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday at home with friends and family.
We want our customers and associates to enjoy Thanksgiving their own way, Demos Parneros, president of North American Stores & Online at Staples, said in a company statement.

The article goes on to say that other retailers are also closing on Turkey Day.
He told me that he picked up the phone one Thanksgiving (he was one of the only ones there, as everyone else was given the day off), and some woman went ballistic on him for not being open. She was like, "eff you." And he was like, "no, I'm the chef, 'EFF YOU.'" Ah, thanks for bringing back the memory.
i live in a small town & outlying areas where the big box stores are roll up the rug on sundays with a few exceptions and Turkey Day ,too.
Today I learned the easiest way to carry food is in the stomach.
I think Costco is closed for the big six holidays now.
I’m glad this experiment is FAILING!
Sadly my employer was in on the ground floor of this more than 20 years ago. I remember we were all summoned to a conference call where they floated the trial balloon.
“We are thinking of being open on Thanksgiving this year. What do you guys all think about that?”
There was about 60 seconds of DEAD SILENCE. Absolutely NOBODY wanted to chime in with what they REALLY thought!
Finally some store manager up in Michigan chimed in and shouted “Well, G-D Dammit, you’ve gotta draw the line SOMEWHERE!”
Rumor was a bunch of corporate bigwigs flew up to Michigan, dragged him into a closed-door meeting and told him in no uncertain terms to cool it on the conference calls.
And, of course, we were open that Thanksgiving.
I’m old enough to remember when the only establishments open on Thanksgiving Day were the hospitals and the Chinese restaurants.
And Christmas. ♫ Far-rar-rar-rar, rar-rar-rar-rar....
Of course in order to have on-line deals people will still be working. And opening early on Black Friday usually means people are working Thanksgiving.
People in retail work on Thanksgiving, store open or not. It’s always been that way.
I recently shopped at a Staples, and asI checked out the cashier said it has been a pleasure serving you.
Staples has a new full time customer.
I’m so bummed. Thanksgiving is usually the day I stock up on memo pads, Bic pens, rulers and paper clips.
Guess I’m going to have to take my office supply business elsewhere.

It’s not failing at all. Most of the big stores will be open. And even if they aren’t people will be working setting up for Black Friday. It used to be no big deal, part of the whole Santa at the end of the Thanksgiving parade concept was that Santa would then go to the store that was the primary sponsor and the Christmas shopping season would begin. Then WalMart decided to be open, and since they’re the Great Satan it became this huge tragedy and everybody started pretending this was unheard of. It wasn’t. And it will continue.
Hope others follow suit. I remember when most places were closed every Sunday.( Grew up in Mass)
We shop Staples exclusively on line as we are two hours from the nearest store. Mainly we buy paper and cardboard boxes. One thing that’s really great is that they do free shipping when the charge is over a certain point.
Many other suppliers charge as much for shipping as the items bought.
As a self-employed guy, I go to Staples a lot. I like the local store, but notice that their inventory gets thinner and thinner. They’re moving inexorably to the online model.
That’s funny right there I don’t care how many chinks you have in your armor!
The only place that I go to shop now would be food stores. Everything else, I can get online.
