It is English, an old term that is derived from the same root as merchant but refers more to someone operating a retail business. I’ve heard that “grocer” is the best equivalent (I have a friend who had Mercer as a maiden name).

Very close to Mercier (French) which is my name. When I first read about this guy I nearly had a heart attack.
