We have enough sensible laws on the books. Whats needed is action toward helping people with life/mental issues that might be likely to want to kill someone. I know thats hard to see sometimes, but enough clues were there for the Oregon shooting and the recent church shooting as well. No one stepped in to stop these killers.
“No one stepped in to stop these killers.”
In Florida it is possible to Baker Act somebody. If that person is judged a danger to himself or others they can be put in a psych ward for two weeks of evaluation. No matter how bizarre or dangerous a person is they are seldom Baker Acted. That’s because the state has to pay for the incarceration and officers are warned not to do it.
Often, people who kill others have had many encounters that would qualify, but nothing is done because of the expense. Another problem is lots of people behave crazy but never hurt anybody. How do you make the call? Who is qualified to make the call?
