Think You Can Live Fossil Fuel Free? Take the Challenge [September 28th - October 2nd]

Eliminate fossil fuels! We hear it all the time.

Sounds easy, right? Then pledge to live fossil fuel free for a week and see what it's really like.

The nationwide Fossil Fuel Free Week is set for September 28th - October 2nd. Are you willing to take the challenge?

What's That You Say?

It's not that easy - fossil fuels are everywhere! Here are common items to avoid if you really want to take the Challenge. Check back daily to see more.

Day 1

“I'll just ride my bike instead of driving.”

Great! But you're riding on rubber tires and other components manufactured from crude oil and natural gas such as the brake pads, seat, and pedals. Guess they'll have to walk.

Day 2

“I'll just stay home and text and video chat friends.”

Your smartphone may be modern, but it's like a handheld dinosaur with so many fossil fuel parts inside it. The screen, board, microchip, and cover are just a few. Plus, it's powered by electricity generated from natural gas or coal. Try smoke signals instead.

Day 3

We hope you're healthy this week.

Modern medicine wouldn't exist without oil and natural gas. The plastics that permeate your doctor's office – from a simple stethoscope to an EKG machine – aren’t possible without petrochemicals. Medicines themselves are manufactured from petroleum products. Consider rescheduling your doctor's appointment.

Day 4

Since you can only walk to work, what are you wearing to cope with the weather?

Whether it’s a hot day that calls for clothes that wick away sweat, or a cool fall morning that requires a fleece, your wardrobe is stitched together by synthetic fibers derived from petroleum. Even most cotton shirts are a blend with lycra or other modern fibers. Thought about a fig leaf instead?

Day 5

“There doesn't seem to be much I can do, so I'll just chill and have a drink.”

Happy hour may be near, but without fossil fuels it doesn’t matter how good the hops and malted barley are, you still don't have beer. You need heat and electricity for fermenting and bottling. And beer trucks don't run on sunshine and wind.*

* Electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels don’t exist without oil, natural gas and mined components. Plus, since they’re intermittent sources of energy, wind and solar are backed up by natural gas and coal power at night and when the wind doesn’t blow.

I would have posted this sooner, but I just found out about it. I hope it becomes an annual event, and that the people who claim to be against fossil fuels take the challenge.

Naked, outside, hungry and with dysentery is about the only way you could manage it.

Will they be happy when we’re all driven back to the Stone Age?

Probably.

Vaseline AKA petroleum jelly is necessary to protect us when the politicians and the enviro-whackos take their toll on us.

Barefoot. Exception allowed if they made the shoes from the skin of an animal they took themselves with a stone, personally made, weapon.

Not to speak of products and packaging made from rock oil feedstock.

Is there any direct evidence that crude oil comes from dead dinosaurs and plants?

They could get their own sail powered whaling vessel, and start harvesting.

I supposed they could use faggots for the smelting and working iron, the whale oil to be reserved for lubrication.

Dam, we missed.

Well, there’s still the rest of the day but...i’ll be taking a 15 year old gas guzzling cab to Newark airport where i’ll fly in a contraption that probably sucks fuel down Michael Moore sucks down whoppers.

When i get to my destination, i’ll take another cab to a hotel room where i’ll blast the air conditioner, because, well, it doesn’t cost me extra...

Not Possible in Today’s Modern Society. Even the Amish cannot separate themselves fully from the modern conveniences of the world. Propane powered stoves and refrigerators. Diesel powered generators for heat, and working in the dairy barn - the milk cooler has to be kept cool somehow! Buggies with rubber tires, and turn signals with battery power. (No there are no squirrels or chipmunks on a wheel that generates the power for the batteries in the buggy).

So in essence if you want to be Fossil Fuel Free - whale oil is no longer available, as it has been outlawed. You cannot even pitch a tent that is made with nylon (synthetic fibers, poles with stretch fibers to make them less likely to be broken, a sleeping bag is made with polyster fill)

Some of it is mixed in with dead dinosaurs and rotten ferns, so that's where all of it came from. Can't you see the logic? This was all determined, Settled Science, back in the 19th century. What are the chances that oil fields are subsurface traps for hydrocarbons seeping up from deep below? That would screw up Liberal Dogma. After all, if there are hydrocarbons seeping up, oil fields would regenerate. (Well, they do, but that doesn't count.)

Besides, Peak Oil is past. We are going to run out sometime in the afternoon, next Tuesday.

Where does Titan get its fossil fuel (methane)? Where does Pluto get its fossil fuel?

They won't be able to use any energy or structure.
There is NO component in a windmill, a solar array or a hydro plant that wasn't mined and manufactured using fossil fuels.
There is NO component in any generator that wasn't mined and manufactured using fossil fuels.
There is NO component in any transmission line that wasn't mined and manufactured using fossil fuels.
There is NO component in any domicile that wasn't mined and manufactured using fossil fuels.

Walked by my husband reading the WSJ and he called out that CA’s Gov. Brown environmental controls would have that state’s energy use on par with north Korea; reduce 80% by 2050.

I’m sorry. Did I say ‘Stone Age’? I meant ‘North Korea’.

Pretty much the same thing...

There are natural sources other than crude oil for plastics, fibers and other products, and crude oil production will become increasingly more expensive. The wise will keep more options in mind.
