3.5 Million More Foreign-Born Workers Employed Since Obama Took Office
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 10/2/15 | Ali Meyer

Posted on 10/02/2015 7:26:01 AM PDT by markomalley

There are 3,553,000 more foreign-born workers employed today than when President Obama took office in January 2009, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

There are currently close to 25 million foreign-born workers employed in the United States, and this number increased by 14,000 in September. In January 2009, when the president took office, there were only 21,928,000 foreign-born workers employed.

The BLS does not distinguish between legal immigrants who are permitted to work here and illegal aliens in this data set.

While the number of employed foreign-born workers is increasing, the number of native-born workers has declined. For the past three months, since July, the number of employed native-born workers has declined every month. Since August, employed native-born workers have declined by 262,000.

The unemployment rate for foreign-born workers at 4.6 percent is lower than the unemployment rate for native-born workers at 4.9 percent.

Why do American citizens allow themselves and their children to be discriminated against by their own government? Every Congressman should have to answer for this nasty treatment.

It’s outrageous. No jobs for Americans, but jobs for foreigners, many of whom hate us.

Companies get tax breaks for hiring foreign workers. They also do not have to pay FICA taxes or follow the Obamacare mandate for them (if they are H1B or illegal). Furthermore, Federal law encourages this hiring, and in some cases mandates it as part of diversity quotas.

Another Obama promise kept.

He promised to create millions of jobs.

He just didn’t say they would be for illegals and other foreigners.

Haven’t immigrants traditionally worked harder for less pay? That is my recollection of what I know about history of our country. Today Americans do not work as hard as we did in the past.

I think if more Americans had a Protestant work ethic, the belief of a honest days work for a honest days pay, we would have less of this problem.

I guess I’m saying it’s both a supply and demand problem. Not just one sided.

Obama telling a half-truth is still a big, fat lie.

What has happened in our economy that we have so many foreign workers?

On the one hand, we hear that they are doing jobs Americans won’t do. But why aren’t Americans doing these jobs?

When you consider that some of these jobs, such as hotel maids and janitorial work, are not highly skilled (not saying they can’t be difficult physical work, just that you don’t need specific education), why can’t the millions of high school dropouts and less educated people in this country be doing such jobs, instead of being on public assistance?

How is it that certain sectors of the economy, such as hotel maids and taxi drivers, are almost completely dominated by foreign born workers? How is it that Joe Biden was right; while he mangled his comment about having an Indian accent in a 7-11, how it is that so many convenience stores and gas stations are run by the foreign born nowadays?

Do we really need foreign workers when we have millions of our own unemployed? Or do many of our native unemployed feel that certain jobs are beneath them, so they won’t do such jobs?

For example, decades ago, many domestic helpers and maids were black women. Nowadays, most such workers are Hispanic. Do blacks think that such jobs are beneath them? Honest question; I know it’s politically incorrect to even pose such a question.

They feel they can get almost as much money on welfare and not have to lift a finger...

I say the only people who should get welfare are those with physical or mental handicaps that keep them from doing any work...
The others should meet a truck at 8:00AM each weekday and spend 8 hours cleaning our highways and parks for their “welfare” checks.

On the one hand, we hear that they are doing jobs Americans won’t do. But why aren’t Americans doing these jobs?

Simply not true. Americans are doing all of those jobs.

Are There Really Jobs Americans Won’t Do? A detailed look at immigrant and native employment across occupations

This analysis tests the often-made argument that immigrants do only jobs Americans don't want. If the argument is correct, there should be occupations comprised entirely or almost entirely of immigrants (legal and illegal). But Census Bureau data collected from 2009 to 2011, which allows for detailed analysis of all 472 separate occupations, shows that there were only a handful of majority-immigrant occupations. Thus, there really are no jobs that Americans won't do. Further, we estimated the share of occupations that are comprised of illegal immigrants, and found that there are no occupations in which the majority of workers are illegally in the country.

Among the findings:

Of the 472 civilian occupations, only six are majority immigrant (legal and illegal). These six occupations account for 1 percent of the total U.S. workforce. Moreover, native-born Americans still comprise 46 percent of workers even in these occupations.

Many jobs often thought to be overwhelmingly immigrant (legal and illegal) are in fact majority native-born:

Maids and housekeepers: 51 percent native-born

Taxi drivers and chauffeurs: 58 percent native-born

Butchers and meat processors: 63 percent native-born

Grounds maintenance workers: 64 percent native-born

Construction laborers: 66 percent native-born

Porters, bellhops, and concierges: 72 percent native-born

Janitors: 73 percent native-born

There are 67 occupations in which 25 percent or more of workers are immigrants (legal and illegal). In these high-immigrant occupations, there are still 16.5 million natives — accounting for one out of eight natives in the labor force.

High-immigrant occupations (25 percent or more immigrant) are primarily, but not exclusively, lower-wage jobs that require relatively little formal education.

In high-immigrant occupations, 59 percent of the natives have no education beyond high school, compared to 31 percent of the rest of the labor force.

Natives tend to have high unemployment in high-immigrant occupations, averaging 14 percent during the 2009-2011 period, compared to 8 percent in the rest of the labor market. There were a total of 2.6 million unemployed native-born Americans in high-immigrant occupations. Do we really need foreign workers when we have millions of our own unemployed? Or do many of our native unemployed feel that certain jobs are beneath them, so they won’t do such jobs?

We have a surplus of labor, which means that wages remain stagnant or decline. Immigrants will work for less than the native born and in many cases are not entitled to various welfare benefits. Employers privatize the profits and socialize the costs, i.e., the taxpayer pays whether it is schools, the prison system, or health care.

OK, here are the numbers

Foreign born workers:

2010: 22,226,000
2015: 24,928,000

Native-born workers:

2010: 117,468,000
2015: 124,052,00

So the increase in jobs held has been about 2.7 million for immigrants, and 6.5 million for native born workers. I see that many posters here are claiming that ‘nearly all’ the new jobs go to foreign born workers, but that’s not what the BLS statistics show.
