Well, “Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad” is from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem “The Masque of Pandora”

“Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad” is from “Daniel, a Model for Young Men” by William Anderson Scott.

Then there’s the Latin “Quos Deus vult perdere, prius dementat”.

They all come originally from Sophocles 497/496BC-406-405BC and his play “Antigone”
