A gunman opened fire at 10:38 this morning, killing 10 people, while wounding 7 others at Umpqua Community College. Three of the wounded are listed in critical condition, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said during a 4:45 p.m. press conference today.
The identities of the shooter and the victims were unavailable at press time. At least 11 had been transported to Mercy Medial Center, according to Mercy spokeswoman Kathleen Nickel, and two of those died. One victim was life-flighted north. As many as 10 victims were dead and the alleged shooter was reportedly killed.
Kortney Moore, 18, from Rogue River, was in her Writing 115 class in Snyder Hall when one shot came through a window. She saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter was inside at that point, and he told people to get on the ground. The shooter was asking people to stand up and state their religion and then started firing away, Moore said. Moore was lying there with people who had been shot.
There are unconfirmed reports that the shooter had either been shot or had shot himself. An official confirmed that the shooter had been “neutralized.”
Brady Winder, 23, of Portland, said he was in the room next door when he heard a loud thud that didn’t sound like a gunshot. He then heard a percussion of gunshots and the students all fled out the front door.
They left “like ants, people screaming, “Get out!” Winder said.

Reminds me of the Westgate shopping mall attack in Kenya where the jihadis would ask potential victims to recite prayers and answer questions that only a devout Muslim would know and then killed the people that couldn’t answer-the Christians IOW.

Not only are people too stupid to arm themselves and shoot back, they’re also too stupid to rush the shooter as a group rather than stand there like sheep in a slaughterhouse to be killed individually. Oregon is not a solid blue state. And Douglas County, whose county seat is Roseburg, is a red county. (It's just below the blue area).
But some of the blue counties in Oregon contain the majority of the population.

If you freeze in a panic, then you freeze and must take the consequences. It happens. If you make up your mind in advance to accept whatever consequences may result, then you are better prepared to avoid freezing and can react. The more people who are similarly prepared in advance in their own minds increases everyone’s ability to react and challenge the threat. Condoning this sheep-like behavior in a slaughterhouse benefits no one.
I don’t think it is too much to ask that a couple students out of 100s could possibly step up and fight back instead of being “frozen with fear”. I am a woman but have been in several life threatening situations (fire and robbery) and I certainly didn’t just freeze with fear. I was terrified but I acted to save myself and not be a victim. What in the world has happened to people that no one has any idea how to fight back??
All sane people feel fear. It’s what you do with it. I took a handgun course taught by professionals 15 years ago. The instructor said that if you find yourself in a situation where you know you are going to die, you might as well die cool. He was a retired highly decorated Ranger. Not a mirror shades, jump boots, starched fatigues Rambo but a quiet, unassuming and accomplished man. And probably one of the most dangerous men I have ever met.
