When the US and USSR were engaged in their proxy conflicts during the cold war in Central America, in Africa, even in Afghanistan there was always an ideological element and the forces of the two countries never confronted each other directly on the battlefield. The risk of a superpower conflagration was kept at one remove......
For Putin, the priority is the preservation of the Syrian state. He looks at Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, and sees western interventions that have resulted in anarchy. He foresees the same for Syria if the west sees toppling Assad, rather than combating Isis, as the priority.
It was possible, after what both Barack Obama and Putin said at the UN, to divine some shifting towards a sliver of common ground. Obama said Russia (and Iran) could be involved and hinted at some flexibility about the timing of Assads departure. Putin allowed that Assad might eventually go. Those verbal nuances have been lost in the sudden outbreak of competitive air strikes.
It is just possible that the US-Russia military talks, now agreed, and the small hints of convergence over Assad could produce a cooperative approach. The alternative the risk of a US-Russia military clash over Syria by accident cannot be what either Moscow or Washington wants.

Funny, Putin seems fine with disassembling the neighboring state of Ukraine, a nation Russia has waged war on with its little green men, a nation that he has brought anarchy to.
The only thing the US cares about is how will this help fight global warming, and what effect will this all have on transgender rights.
What Putin wants is to control the Middle East, and Obama is perfectly willing to let him.
“Putin wants to preserve Syria”
I don’t really know if that is accurate. It’s murky.
I am shocked that the NYTimes put up a cartoon about Obama and Putin putting Putin as World Leader
It doesnt take a Nostradamus to see where this is going. Before this is over, Iran, with Russian and Chinese support, will invade Saudi Arabia and seize the Saudi oil fields. With Russia and Iran in control of most of the worlds developed oil reserves, they can not only say, Death to America, but they can then make it happen, and who do we have to blame for this? We have no one to blame but ourselves, for it was us who voted politicians into office, both Democrat and Republican, who could be bought by the Saudis through campaign contributions and outright bribes to prevent the development of our own oil reserves. We will soon be dependent on oil reserves controlled by our enemies, who will not hesitate to use this dependence to destroy us.
Once our oil supply is interrupted, our economy could collapse. If our economy can no longer provide for the 47% of our population who refuse to provide for themselves but depend on Free Stuff in exchange for their vote, our population could fragment and slide into the abyss violence and racial hatred.
Putin, the chess player that he is, knows that Obama, an impotent homosexual, doesnt have the courage to prevent him from taking control of the Middle East, and by the time Obama is out of office in 2017, itll be too late.
As was said in the old Chinese curse, May you live in interesting times, we now live in interesting times.
Too little too late.
This quote certainly rings true... He looks at Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, and sees western interventions that have resulted in anarchy. He foresees the same for Syria if the west sees toppling Assad, rather than combating Isis, as the priority.
I only wish Obama's USA had the same commitment to Israel, Egypt and Jordan.
This man tried to warn us.
I suppose he is trying to “preserve” Georgia, Ukraine, and now Syria, in addition to threats against others...
All for preservation!
Bwahahahahaha!
The USA contracted a terminal case of stupidity.
If it were not for Russia’s close ties to Iran, a person could almost cheer what they are doing in Syria. But that casts severe doubt on it all, even though Putin is probably correct that the surivival of Syria is the only thing preventing Islamic State from controlling a much larger area of the Middle East.
Presuming the “Free Syrians” aren’t just ISIS or Taliban, how long would they stand up against ISIS once they were able to defeat Assad?
I’d say its highly likely that ISIS has been playing Obama like a fiddle.
It the Russian bombs are falling on Muslims, then there is a very high probability that they are killing our enemies.
....and paranoia:
Just for shits and giggles, Putin should give a briefing on the day's objectives and future strike operations and call out the Russian/Iranian/Chinese/Assad organization as:
Ground Operations Group (GOG), and the Navy/Marine detachment at Tartus and Latakia as:Marine Assault General Operations Group (MAGOG).
Watch heads explode......or the world.
Can ANY& of you POSSIBLY imagine the kind of war these incompetent pacifists in the Administration will conduct in the next year and a half???
MARK MY WORDS! THIS ADMINISTRATION'S COWARDICE AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS WILL GET THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN'S KILLED AND WILL REVERBERATE FOR THE NEXT FEW HUNDRED YEARS!!
