Russian Jets 'Bombing Islamic State' In Syria
sky ^

The US is "alarmed" after Vladimir Putin orders airstrikes without consulting other countries operating in the region.

Russia says it has started to bomb Islamic State targets in Syria.

The Russian defence ministry said a number of airstrikes had targeted vehicles and warehouses belonging to militants.

Russia has been strengthening its military presence in Syria, where it supports the government forces of President Bashar al Assad.

But it is unclear whether Russia intends to target all forces opposing Mr Assad - including US-backed rebels - or just extremists such as IS.

A US defence official said he did not believe initial Russian attacks carried out near Homs were against IS. France agreed based on "initial indications".

Hard to tell what's really happening. It's being reported that Russia's bombing our ostensible allies and not isis. I can believe that...they're in Syria to prp up Assad...they're going to go avter his enemies no matter who they are.

What a disaster!

Nice to think someone has the _alls to clean out ISIS... it sure as hell isn’t us anymore.

Obama should offer air support - or something...

“our allies” = “moderate Syrian rebels”

I believe our best efforts identified just a few
hundred of those.

Well, when you decide you’re no longer the man of the house, someone will step up and fill that role.

Stop clucking and go sit down with the other hens, Obie.

Russia is defending Syria, not toppling it.
Preserving Assad places him in debt to Putin, leading to a solid Russian presence in the region.

As for the confusion over whether Russian jets are bombing ISIS or “moderate rebels”, those in the sociopolitical middle are generally hostile to Assad and first-world sensibilities, and Putin et al are fond of using terms very loosely when explaining actions. Opposing ISIS doesn’t necessarily mean “on our side”; the enemy of my enemy may be my enemy as well.

Russian jets have begun airstrikes in Syria after apparently only giving the U.S. an hour to remove its planes and officials from the area.
