The prospect that the Obama administration may abstain from a vote at the United Nations condemning America is one of the most astonishing pieces of news we’ve read in weeks.
The matter on which it might abstain is the resolution that comes up annually condemning the United States trade embargo of the communistic regime in Cuba.
The wire is quoting American officials as saying that the administration is weighing an abstention on the vote. The wire reckons that “merely considering an abstention is unprecedented.”
Our current politics have long since crossed the beach beyond which the country is traditionally supposed to speak with one voice.
The Cuba embargo is different. It is a series of laws. Congress passed them according to constitutional procedures. Presidents signed them. Among them were John Kennedy and William Clinton. One of those laws, the Cuban Democracy Act, contains legislated pre-conditions for ending the embargo. The Cuban communists have met none of these legislated pre-conditions.
So an abstention in respect of the United Nations annual condemnation of the embargo is special.
It would be a case of an America president formally standing apart from his own country.
It would a mockery, while on the soil of the United Nations, of the faithful execution clauses of the President’s own constitutional oath.
This is because of the Constitution’s commerce clause, which says that Congress shall have the power “to regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes.” This is much clearer than, say, the Jerusalem passport case, where the president asserted authority under the reception clause that grants him the power to receive ambassadors. Here the grant of power to congress is unambiguous.
No other branch of government is granted the power to regulate commerce with foreign nations.

Senator Rubio is quoted by the AP as saying that by abstaining, Mr. Obama would be “putting international popularity ahead of the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States.”
AFAIK, Congress has to lift the embargo.
President “Present” Doesn’t vote again...
He doesn’t want to vote because he knows he would have to vote AGAINST the US in order for him to live with himself and that would hurt his DIM-WIT-O-CRAP successor.

Will President Trump have the guts to tell the UN they must move off USA soil? There certainly is a better use for that building. No more Diplomatic Immunity for all those who wish to street race everywhere, either?
He is abstaining due to a conflict of interest: his job requires he vote “No” but his heart of hearts desires he vote “Yes”.
I am actually shocked he showed enough self-control to abstain.
But he does have that sartorial thing going for him.
He wears nice suits and has a lovely crease in his pants.
Even a conservative journalist recognizes the importance of that.
Obama isn’t an American, by word, deed, or creed, so why would he show any support for the US?
More important than what our Dear Leader does is the vote.
If they vote to condemn us do we quit funding the U.N.? It only seems right to cut off all the funding we give.
I would agree with giving the UN the axe, but obama being such a flaming socialist would probably turn control of the US over to the UN, and giggle all the way on his trip to the nearest bath house to celebrate.

He was involved in the establishment of the United Nations both as a U.S. State Department and U.N. official. Hiss was accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950.
On August 3, 1948, Whittaker Chambers, a former Communist Party member, testified under subpoena before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) that Hiss had secretly been a Communist while in federal service. Chambers had previously testified under oath that Hiss had never been a Communist or a spy, and Chambers would admit, under oath, to other instances where he had committed perjury under oath. Called before HUAC, Hiss categorically denied the charge. When Chambers repeated his claim on nationwide radio, Hiss filed a defamation lawsuit against him.
During the pretrial discovery process, Chambers produced new evidence indicating that he and Hiss had been involved in espionage, which both men had previously denied under oath to HUAC. A federal grand jury indicted Hiss on two counts of perjury; Chambers admitted to the same offense but, as a cooperating government witness, was never charged. Although Hiss’s indictment stemmed from the alleged espionage, he could not be tried for that crime because the statute of limitations had expired.”
