I’m going to be honest yon ladies and gems participating in this thread.
I’m so confused about that Mideast situation my head reels as I try to get a grasp. And I am both a news and political junkee, not that I’m especially proud of this.
So American went to war with Saddam on the guise of weapons of mass destruction but it was mostly cause they want to get rid of the guy. The Iraqis hang Saddam, that the Democrats most adored, and Obama took over and pulled out the remaining US soldiers.
Meanwhile Optometrist Assad is all over the place, but mostly doing the bidding of whatever powerful country hangs around and gives him money while he gasses his citizens who have a problem with that.
Meanwhile meanwhile.....Putin, a man’s man but evil, plots to take over the world once again with his own self being a benign but firm dictator, decides that Syria would be a great place to get in a Russian footprint for the Soviet Union Part II.
Meanwhile once more, President Obama threatens Optometrist Assad with fire, brimstone and the horrors of hell should he gas the Syrians but Assad does it anyway. Obama does nothing.
So Putin, filled with testosterone and dreams of glory, is going in and getting rid of those thugs called ISis, thieves, rapists and robbers rounded up on the Internet and no match for any country with just teeny tiny gonads....like Obama.
Whew.
So do I have it right so far? Cause I got more.
Yes, Pat, but do NOT hold back. I’d love to hear ‘em!
Not quite:

The Soviets have had footprint in Syria since 1946, and if I recall correctly, the USSR and Syria were the equivalent of a-hole buddies from about 1970 until the fall of the USSR. Although the relationship between the Russians and Syria has not been as overt over the last 25 years as it was during the height of the Cold War, the Russian foot-print is nothing new. Indeed, if you look at this objectively, Russia has a much greater interest in Syrian than the United States should have give the fact that Syria is located about a "nine iron" from Russia's southern border.
Right so far, but to clarify one point:
There were two post-9/11 wars in Iraq.
1. Eliminate the Saddam regime. This was achieved (”Mission Accomplished”) in 3 days flat, eviscerating the power infrastructure with terrifying efficiency & speed.
2. Fill the power vacuum. Seems nobody seriously considered that once the regime was torn out, a gaping hole remained and required filling ASAP; failing to install a new & viable government within days...weeks...months...years, every “power by any means necessary” would-be tyrant et al jumped in to take advantage of the situation, leaving an infestation requiring block-by-block boots-on-the-ground exterminators ... until the Obama decided he actually liked the infestation and pulled out so they could take over as they saw fit.
