Pope secretly met Kentucky clerk over gay marriage licenses

Pope Francis secretly met a Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples and gave her words of encouragement, her attorney said.

Mat Staver, attorney and founder of the Liberty Counsel, told CBS News on Tuesday night that the pope met Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis and her husband at the Vatican embassy in Washington last Thursday during his visit to the United States.

Vatican chief spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said he would neither confirm nor deny the report and that there would be no further statement. This was unusual for the Vatican, which normally issues either denials or confirmations.

The report of the meeting came after Francis largely avoided the contentious issue of same-sex marriage during his historic visit to the United States, where he addressed Congress, met with the homeless and urged the country to welcome immigrants.

The original story came from Robert Moynihan, Letter #38, 2015: Kim and Francis (from Inside the Vatican magazine).

Why did he keep it secret? If he intended to support her, have an audience with photos. This is, at best, a tepid support damned with faint praise.

I think this story is BS and the Pope has more important things to do than worry about Kentucky politics. Hell he didn’t meet with imprisoned Cuban dissidents what makes you think she is so special???

I don’t know what to think; you’re probably right, but why lie about something that is easily disprovable?

Why did he keep it secret?

I'm not saying this the case, but maybe he simply wanted to meet with her. (If a pastor meets with one of his parishioners in his office on Wednesday, would you expect him to make that the subject of his sermon on Sunday?)

Since the disclosure of this apparently came from her side, perhaps that was the intent.

That’s not nice :) you could have put it in a less blunt way.

I’m disappointed in what he didn’t say and what he seems to stand for, and say on the way back to Italy all the things he should have said in front of congress.

But he still said them, so I will still follow them.

I’m an american even if i dont like the president.

I’m catholic even if I dont agree with the pope on everything.

I wish there were four year elections though :)

Maybe because this was an actual meeting and not a photo op.

“I’m not saying this the case, but maybe he simply wanted to meet with her”

Important public figures don’t have lives like the you and me or the pastor. Whatever they do makes the news. He can’t just have a private audience and not expect it to make the news.

When you have an audience with photos then that’s all it is ... a photo-op. There are times when a religious leader may NOT want to come across like a typical @sshole politician.

“I’m catholic even if I dont agree with the pope on everything.”

Every Catholic must agree with the pope on everything or you are a heretic! This man says things in rebellion against the Church. That is why it is so clear that Jorge Bergoglio is not the pope, but rather a non-Catholic and a heretic.

He along with each anti-pope that supported the anti-doctrinal “Vatican II Council” (each so-called pope since the last true pope, Pope Pius XII of happy memory)

He and those that support his claim to papacy need to repent and admit that they have stolen the buildings and the prestige from true Catholics, and pray for God’s forgiveness and healing as God and the faithful then establishes the next true pope who will (like great popes of long ago) be a man after God’s own heart and will not teach heresy and will not question or shed doubt on the doctrine which no valid pope has ever questioned or tried to twist or redefine. Truth doesn’t change with the times.

Saint Michael the Archangel, pray for us!

I’m no fan of Vatican II.

But at least the pope is still against gay marriage and abortion.

I dont have to agree with him on political positions.

I will pray that he sees the light or there is a change in the papacy.

I dont know what else to do.

“I dont know what else to do.”

Convert to Protestantism.

At least that way, papal shenanigans won’t cause so much drama.

(I’m joking. Calm down.) Peace.

That simply is not true...the Pope is not infallible...the voting him in is.

The Pope kept this secret. He kept his meeting with the Little Sisters of the Poor secret.

He should have demanded to have 100 Little Sisters of the Poor, and Kim Davis, seated in the front rows at his welcoming ceremony at the White House, and at his speech to Congress.

Fox and Friends discussing this event today. From Breitbart:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a 2016 GOP presidential candidate, told Breitbart News exclusively on Tuesday night that he hopes the media will learn from Pope Francis’ meeting with Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis that what she stands for is religious liberty against “judicial tyranny.”

What a coward. Francis basked in the glory of the spot light all over the East Coast, but slinks in to visit with someone who actually stood against the forces of Satan, without a public word from him. Guess he didn’t want to mess up his fawning media coverage.

If this is true, I am so disappointed with the pope. He knows how to manipulate the press and knows what he wants in the newspapers and tv. He acts like he was ashamed to meet with Kim or the Little Sisters of the Poor and had to meet them in secret like a mistress.

I would respect the Pope more if he had not met with Kim and the Sisters. It seems like he is wishy washy and playing both sides of the coin. He knows he has to stick with the Bible but he also wants to be loved by the liberal media.

I real leader would promote the Bible and not a “gentler and friendlier” liberal agenda.

“Every Catholic must agree with the pope on everything or you are a heretic!”

Actually this is a common misperception. Not true. There are times, (I think that there have been three in 2000 years) that the Pope declares something, most recently involving the Virgin Mary in the 19th century but. He does speak with great authority. But for example, St. John Paul was very devoted to the Fatima apparitions and Divine Mercy revelations but I don’t have to believe them. I do believe that I must pay particular attention to what he is saying and pray to the Holy Spirit for wisdom to discern how it affects my life. I’m retired and I also recycle so not much to do there and if he comes out and insists that I have to vote for the dems, I won’t. He won’t btw.
