Trey Gowdy of South Carolina has become a rightwing folk hero for leading the crusade against Hillary Clinton over the use of her private email server
The US congressman who is leading the public inquiry against Hillary Clintons use of a private email server could continue his rambunctious rise to Washington power, if a drafting effort by the Republican far right succeeds in the wake of John Boehners shock resignation.
Trey Gowdy, the South Carolina representative and chair of the House select committee on Benghazi, has been a thorn in the side of the former secretary and current White House frontrunner and has forced her to testify before him next month.
Now, hardline conservatives like those who drove Boehner to step down as House speaker last week are recruiting the fiery former prosecutor to take his crusades up a notch: as Republican majority leader in the House of Representatives.
Gowdys chairmanship of the Benghazi committee has made him a rightwing hero of sorts.
Mia Love, the first-term representative from Utah who has quickly risen to influence in the Republican ranks, tweeted on Tuesday: Join me in drafting Trey Gowdy for Majority Leader.

According to the Guardian, anyone to the right of George McGovern is a right-wing extremist.
Thanks Radix. I agree with your take on it too.
Noumenon to RINOs, Dhimmicrats, “progressives” and other liberal scum: run, bitches.
There is nothing in the Constitution that requires the Speaker of the House of Representatives to be a member of that body nor is there anything in the Constitution that requires the Speaker of the House of Representatives even to be a citizen. As far as the courts are concerned, as far as we Can know in human understanding there is no possibility that the courts would enter into that sort of political decision-making.
I do agree, however, that it is a matter of common sense.
BELIEVES IN THE CONSTITUTION = FAR RIGHT
to the foul teeth socialist failures in the uk, a pathetic country
What difference would it make? The Benghazi committee has no prosecutorial power. Gowdy is just a slick talking ring master of a dog and pony show.
Not hard to tell a lefty wrote this story. Look at all the adjectives.
It always makes me cringe when I see the term “Far Right Republicans” in a headline or a story, as most of the media only frequently applies the adjective “far” to the right, and not the left. For example, consider the following Google search-term results:
site:www.nytimes.com “far right” 2180 results
site:www.nytimes.com “far left” 99 results
And for comparison:
site:www.foxnews.com “far right” 1590 results
site:www.foxnews.com “far left” 1860 results
Okay, perhaps still a little tilted in our favor (at least based on this), but certainly far more balanced than the NY Slimes.
I’m sure most major media websites, besides Fox, would have results like the NY Times.
“So when after a year of not doing anything but catering to her, will he start that?”
You do have a point. How she gets away with things like: “I’ll testify once, and only when I’m ready” I just don’t understand. You or I would be in jail for contempt for trying such nonsense.
“If Gowdy were to become majority leader, it would be almost impossible to continue as chair of the Benghazi committee, which will welcome Clinton on 22 October.”
This would be my biggest reason for voting against him. He would be outstanding as Speaker, but the work he is doing right now is terribly important. There are other Republicans in and out of the House who would also do a great job: Jim Jeffords, Newt Gingrich, or what about Tom DeLay. There is nothing that says that the Speaker has to be an elected member of the House.
She got away with it because Gowdy allowed it. Bhoner barked and Gowdy complied.
Gutless..
WONDERFUL!!
Gowdy’s an establishment guy. I thought I read last night about endorsements for Tom Price—a true conservative?
Yep—Mia’s a RINO and Gowdy is too. Maybe they’re trying to stop this true conservative from having a chance at it:

I though Hensarling is a RINO too.
Gowdy has cozied up to Rubio campaign. Not a good sign.
He is—the URL is misleading. The article is about Tom Price.
I’m OK with Trey Gowdy.
Gowdy is a former prosecutor and can perform like a tiger in committee questions. As a conservative, he is a guy that consults his heart too much.
He is not a hard liner. This whole thing is a put up. It is a set up to get McCarthy as Speaker. McCarthy and the Rinos are saying that they will agree to Gowdy in the figurehead position of Majority Leader is McCarthy is made Speaker. He is being used a a token trade.
Whaqt he can do and what he does are vastly opposed things.
