Education Secretary Duncan’s children to go to Chicago private school he attended
Washington Post ^ | July 9, 2015 | Valerie Strauss

Education Secretary Arne Duncan grew up in Chicago and attended the private, prestigious University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. The pre-K-12 Lab Schools are progressive institutions

...

resident Obama’s two daughters attended the school before moving to Washington in 2009, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s children are enrolled there now. And in the fall, Duncan’s children will be attending Lab, too, while his wife works there.

....

his children will attend a progressive private school in Chicago, a school that does not follow key school reform policies that his Education Department has set for public schools.

It does not, for example, use the Common Core State Standards

...

Why are the Duncans sending their children to this private school?

...

there are ironies to note here.

...

One wonders if there is not a single public school — or public charter school — that Duncan could have chosen

...

a pattern among public policy-makers and influential philanthropists who push specific school reforms — such as charter schools, the elimination of teacher tenure, Common Core, and evaluation of teachers by test scores — yet send their own children to private schools that do none of these things. Bill Gates, for example, who funded the creation of the Common Core, sent his children to private school.

resident Obama’s daughters go to private Sidwell Friends in the District, where officials have said they don’t tie teacher pay to standardized test scores because they don’t think those scores are reliable indicators of teacher effectiveness. On one level, it makes sense for security reasons. On another level, it remains true that these powerful people are removed from the experiences and frustrations of parents who live with the consequences of the policies they set.

C’mon. The cream of the elites cannot mix with the common folk.

I see this as a hit piece against any and all competition to the government school system.

“C’mon. The cream of the elites cannot mix with the common folk.”

True, but at least he’s a responsible parent. If I didn’t have enough money, I would rob banks as needed to pay to send my kids to private school before sending them to a government school these days.

Yup. The children of the ruling class elite cannot attend school with the lower classes. They might pickup bad manners, bad spelling or cooties or sumthing.

Is it good or bad that we’ve heard so little from this guy over seven years?

What a surprise.

Bill Ayers and the whole Chicago Annenberg Challenge worked to design a program to turn all of America's children into socialist robots who can't read, spell, write, do math or think coherently, but can spout every slogan invented by Che and Marx.

With dripping sarcasm: who would willfully put their children into that sort of situation?

Not Arne and not Barry.

The issue is that Democrats want school choice for anyone who can afford it including themselves. But they want to force your tax money to go only to the schools which they themselves think provide a worse education. You have no choice to shift those tax dollars away to the private school of your choice.

I have a feeling that the private schools these elites are sending their kids to are more indoctrination centers than the government schools.

Not exactly close-by; but New Trier HS in Winnetka would be an excellent choice.

On the other hand; he could send his kids to DuSable HS, in the middle of the Robert Taylor Homes.

I've been in both schools. The biggest difference isn't the Dollars-Spent-per-Student; as some would have you believe.

The difference is in the attitudes of the students and their parents.

A few years ago, the students at New Trier HS voted to eliminate lunch period, so they could take an extra academic class during the school day.

During the same time period, while hundreds of students were enrolled at DuSable HS, only a couple dozen would actually show up each day.

Do the math.

Maybe. If you go to some of those schools you're more likely to be PC etc. because of your parents, and when you come out, you're more connected to that progressive world so whatever indoctrination you get is likely to take. If you graduate from some progressive private schools, it's likely or quite possible that progressive ideology will be your future bread and butter, so you don't question it. At public schools, students can just let all that stuff (and a lot of other stuff) go in one ear and out the other.

Even worse are the Dem politicians (in the pocket of the teachers’ unions) who insist public education is just fine. At least these people above push reforms (thereby acknowledging it doesn’t work).

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
