He probably got a better offer. I’m not optimistic about this being a true win for conservatives, not a long-term win.

He knew he couldn’t survive a vote. The Democrats had signaled they
were not going to save him. They no doubt wanted to, but
maybe did not want to make life more contentious by doing so.
He’ll land on his feet, of course, when sober anyway, and become a lobbyist. Or maybe he’ll just take the booty he’s already collected from lobbyists and get down to something serious, like drinking fulltime. (My higher self hopes he enters a 12 Step Program.)
