Senate blocks effort to defund Planned Parenthood
McCltatchy ^ | 9/24/2015 | David Lightmen

The march to avoiding a government shutdown began in earnest Thursday as the Senate blocked an effort to defund Planned Parenthood.

The vote fell 13 votes short of the 60 needed to cut off debate. The bill would have funded the government through December 11. The White House threatened a veto. Current funding runs out Sept. 30.

Next step is expected to be a government funding bill without the Planned Parenthood provision. Final votes are likely early next week.

While the “clean” budget bill is seen as having a chance to win Senate approval, a group of staunch conservatives will try to stop it. Among those leading that effort is Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a Republican presidential candidate, and their best chance may be in the House of Representatives, where Planned Parenthood opponents could be tougher to overcome.

Cruz outlined his vision in a commentary for Politico Magazine Thursday, saying a clean budget bill would be “capitulation...from Republican leadership.

He cited the promise there will be no government shutdown. “On its face, the promise sounds reasonable. Except in practice it means that Republicans never stand for anything,” Cruz argued.

“Surely, you might think, Republicans can use different tactics and accomplish something meaningful without risking a government shutdown,” he said.

But no, said Cruz. “In today’s partisan Washington, there are only two important kinds of votes: show votes on legislation that has no chance of becoming law and votes on legislation that must pass.’’’

“If leadership is correct that we can never win against the president, why did it matter to win a Republican House? A Republican Senate? If Republican majorities in Congress will acquiesce to and affirmatively fund the identical Big Government priorities that Obama supports, then what difference does it make who is in charge of Congress?”

I don't understand it. Doesn't the HOR write the budget. If they write a budget without funding for Planned Parenthood in it, how does the funding go anywhere? If Obama vetoes the budget, couldn't the HOR send him budgets for parts of the gov individually, NOTHING that funded Planned Parenthood? What's Obama going to do? Veto a budget for Disabled Veterans because it doesn't fund PP? (etc)

It the DC "conservatives" can't get something to Obama's desk that doesn't fund PP, their hypocrisy is part of the problem.

What am I missing?

Doesn't Mitch see that we are so over his ineffectiveness. The current fillibuster rules have got to go. Harry Reid has to be put in his place.

Return the Fillibuster rules to what they were when they were founded - Continuous Speech until you got what you wanted or got clotured. Right now the Dems rule via the filibuster on everything they want, putting the minority is command.

I'm fed up with Mitches and John's weakness. Leadership is doing the right thing and moving things forward and they are doing neither of these things.

There is nothing “clean” about this bill.

The ill-conceived 17th Amendment needs to disappear, and then there will be all new faces in the Senate.

“I don’t understand it. Doesn’t the HOR write the budget. “

THERE IS NO BUDGET. THE GOVERNMENT IS OPERATING ON A CONTINUING RESOLUTION.

means everything that Obama wants to spend is ok with the GOP in congress.

That is a huge sin and is causing the current deficit.

No accountability on our representatives as they do not have to vote on a budget.

Smoke and Mirrors.

Sure if you're willing to deal with the IRS threats. Stop paying taxes en masse. We the People can defund the government better than Congress could ever think about.

This post is shallow and clearly anti-Catholic. They key is this: “Sell everything.” That would include hospitals, churches, cathedrals, colleges, universities, etc. Which means that Catholic Church would cease to exist. Which is exactly what the author wants. And we would still have the poor.

I look forward to seeing posts demanding that Baptists, Evangelicals, Episcopalians, Pentacostals, sell off all their property.

Let’s see now....

60 votes to end a filibuster...

13 votes “short” of that...

SO, only 47 Senators voted FOR ending funding for PP.

Hmmm...

Where is this “Republican Majority” you speak of?

Either go nuclear, or go home.

So the government shuts down.

Tell Obama we are not paying for babies to be parted out and sold like auto parts from a junkyard.

Until he relents he can answer for why the government is shut down.

Of course, that would take balls.

And Mitch is a eunuch.
