Pope Francis Just Echoed Obama's 'Offensive' Prayer Breakfast Remarks

While delivering the first address from a pontiff to a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, Pope Francis touched on topics ranging from the plight of immigrants to climate change and the death penalty.

Many of his comments were lightly delivered and unlikely to elicit much controversy, though the reaction might be different if they were given by another world leader.

Case in point: Toward the beginning of his address, Francis alluded to religious extremism, noting that "no religion is immune" from it. His full quote as prepared for delivery:

"Our world is increasingly a place of violent conflict, hatred and brutal atrocities, committed even in the name of God and of religion. We know that no religion is immune from forms of individual delusion or ideological extremism. This means that we must be especially attentive to every type of fundamentalism, whether religious or of any other kind. A delicate balance is required to combat violence perpetrated in the name of a religion, an ideology or an economic system, while also safeguarding religious freedom, intellectual freedom and individual freedoms."

The remarks echo those delivered – albeit with more explicit historical references – by President Barack Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast in February.

"Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ … So this is not unique to one group or one religion. There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency that can pervert and distort our faith."

Obama's comments were criticized as "offensive," "wrongheaded" and detached from present-day reality. Of course, it's more politically acceptable to criticize the president than the pope – time will tell if Francis' remarks draw a similar response.

You can be both a Christian and a Catholic as well. Please see my tagline. Thank-you!

Thank you. There has always been a subtle anti-Catholic subtext in some posters here. For the most part I ignore it. But when someone questions my personal relationship with the almighty without knowing anything about me I tend to go all “Irish”. Don’t get my blood up.

Your orders come from YOU alone. God doesn’t do hatred, or separation of members of the body of Christ. Satan does, though.

Subtle?! You're far too kind. I would describe it more like the spewing of sewage. The bigotry is breathtaking at times. And the moderators allow it, and scold anyone who protests. That being said, this site is valuable for its political discussions and insights. The Religion Forum, though, is something to be avoided.

Thank You, Jesus for appointing me as Your prophetc minister to speak Your Truth from Your Word, which I will do for eternity. No one will stop me from revealing your truth, even those who knowingly or unknowingly work for and are blinded by the devil- satan - the deceiver.

Bears repeating...

“Good summary as to why Catholics are NOT Christians.”

I appreciate Catholics, but no, they are not Christians. They are not Christians theologically, Biblically, and doctrinally.

CHRISTtians FOLLOW ONLY THE JESUS CHRIST OF THE HOLY BIBLE. Our Salvation come ONLY from CHRIST. We don’t need to go through some church in order to be saved (Romans 10:9)

CHRIST JESUS is the ONLY MEDIATOR BETWEEN MAN AND GOD (1 Timothy 2:5), and the Holy Bible is our ONLY AUTHORITY (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

CHRISTians also believe in the Tri-une Godhead (FATHER, SON, HOLY SPIRIT) (Matthew 28:19; John 1:1; 1 John 5:7).

Mary is found nowhere in the Godhead. She is NOT a mediator between us and God the Father or us and God the Son. She was blessed “among” women NOT “above” them. She too needed a Saviour - according to her (Luke 1:47).

ALL humans need a Saviour because we are ALL sinners (Romans 3:23). CHRIST is the ONLY Human who lived a sinless life - not some pastor, pope, or priest (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; Luke 1:35; 1 John 3:5).

The ONLY Saviour came and died on the Calvary’s Cross 2,000 years ago for humans. In order to have Eternal life in Heaven with JESUS, and not in hell with the unsaved, you MUST BE BORN AGAIN BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (John 3). God said good works will not do it, otherwise, Christ came and died for nothing. We know He came to save souls!

If you have not received JESUS as your Saviour, I please ask you to do it today - not tomorrow - but today. CHRIST MUST SOLELY be received in your heart, mind, and life.

God bless."

Is that what they’re teaching at the first church of what’s happening now, founded late last tuesday by a minister who got his ministry by sending in $4.99 and ten boxtops from boxes of cereal? I’d rather listen to the word of God from a church that PREDATES the new testament by about 200 years and was founded by Jesus Christ himself. Since you so revere God’s unalterable, holy word look up Matthew 16: 18-19. And have a nice life, since I will not respond further to any of your posts.

I can understand your reasoning, but I am sometimes surprised by the denial that Catholics express here when the shoe is on the other foot.

Here are the choicest, commie bits and my quick interpretations:

>>A political society endures when it seeks, as a vocation, to satisfy common needs by stimulating the growth of all its members, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability or risk. {Welfare}

>> On the one hand, the patriarch and lawgiver of the people of Israel symbolizes the need of peoples to keep alive their sense of unity by means of just legislation. {Not necessarily God’s laws}

>>hese are men and women who are not concerned simply with paying their taxes, but in their own quiet way sustain the life of society.They generate solidarity by their actions, and they create organizations which offer a helping hand to those most in need. {Using tax payers money.}

>>I would like to mention four of these Americans: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. {Worker’s Party advocate and multi-culturalist semi-Catholic}

>>Building a future of freedom requires love of the common good and cooperation in a spirit of subsidiarity and solidarity. {Channeling the Sandanistas.}

>>We know that no religion is immune from forms of individual delusion or ideological extremism. {We’ just as bad as they who shall not be named.}

>>the simplistic reductionism which sees only good or evil; or, if you will, the righteous and sinners. {No such thing as God’s good, much more subtle than that.}

>>The contemporary world, with its open wounds which affect so many of our brothers and sisters, demands that we confront every form of polarization which would divide it into these two camps.{Everybody has a right to their own moral universe, and we are damaging ourselves by calling attention to others that condemn us.}

>>We know that in the attempt to be freed of the enemy without, we can be tempted to feed the enemy within. To imitate the hatred and violence of tyrants and murderers is the best way to take their place. That is something which you, as a people, reject. {Fighting is never justified. Overcoming the enemy is the same as murder.}

>>The complexity, the gravity and the urgency of these challenges demand that we pool our resources and talents, and resolve to support one another, with respect for our differences and our convictions of conscience. {Everyone in the communist pool.}

>>Such cooperation is a powerful resource in the battle to eliminate new global forms of slavery, born of grave injustices which can be overcome only through new policies and new forms of social consensus.{New world order coming through.}

>>If politics must truly be at the service of the human person, it follows that it cannot be a slave to the economy and finance. {In utopia nothing is made, earned, bought or owned.}

>>Politics is, instead, an expression of our compelling need to live as one, in order to build as one the greatest common good: that of a community which sacrifices particular interests in order to share, in justice and peace, its goods, its interests, its social life.{Call me a kibbutznik.}

>> Dreams which lead to action, to participation, to commitment. {So said Stalin as he stocked his gulags.}

>>We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners. >> So convenient a rationale: Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.}

>>Building a nation calls us to recognize that we must constantly relate to others, rejecting a mindset of hostility in order to adopt one of reciprocal subsidiarity, in a constant effort to do our best. {Open borders or bust.}

>>On this continent, too, thousands of persons are led to travel north in search of a better life for themselves and for their loved ones, in search of greater opportunities. Is this not what we want for our own children? {Raise your children to covet and take the goods of better off sovereign nations.}

>>Let us treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated.{But if you are the US or Hungary, be damned.}

>>The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development...This conviction has led me, from the beginning of my ministry, to advocate at different levels for the global abolition of the death penalty. {Trying to save the unborn child is a misdirect.}

>>society can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes...all for the abolition of the death penalty {Don’t recall that Moses made it an imperative from God for US to kill those who murdered others.}

>>How much has been done in these first years of the third millennium to raise people out of extreme poverty! { I refuse to acknowledge what the US and free market capitalism has done to lift people from poverty.}

It goes without saying that part of this great effort is the creation and distribution of wealth. {Stealing from others who have earned what they have is noble.}

>>We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all” {The earth is not for us, we are for the earth.}

>>an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature” (ibid., 139). “We have the freedom needed to limit and direct technology” {Bring back civil rights activist Van Jones as special Green Advisor.}

>>re: Mertson. “I came into the world. Free by nature, in the image of God, I was nevertheless the prisoner of my own violence and my own selfishness, in the image of the world into which I was born. That world was the picture of Hell, full of men like myself, loving God, and yet hating him; born to love him, living instead in fear of hopeless self-contradictory hungers” {So I rejected Christ and turned to be like Buddhists who profess “to rely on nothing but ‘the truth’ as they experience it directly”

>>A good political leader always opts to initiate processes rather than possessing spaces.{However, never let a good crisis go to waste.}

>>it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade. {But not looking at Benghazi and giving arms to the Syrians.}

Four representatives of the American people.{Four people who became tools of the American left.}

>>Fundamental relationships are being called into question, as is the very basis of marriage and the family. {But I won’t say a word about unnatural families forced by homosexuals, or the the nuclear family that is not being renewed as we promised in our Baptismal vows.}

>>For many of them, a future filled with countless possibilities beckons, yet so many others seem disoriented and aimless, trapped in a hopeless maze of violence, abuse and despair. {Which is not your personal responsibility Chicago,Ferguson and Baltimore.}

Oh but they will go back even a thousand years to find and make a connection. Are they making excuses for what’s going on now in islam? That’s what it looks like to me. Why the pacification? To promote “peace?” Sudden destruction will come upon us.
