If Israel attacks Iran, they will send their air fleet south over Saudi Arabia and attack by flying over the ocean. Maybe refuel in Arabia? As Subs launch missiles to aid in the attack. No need to fly over Syria.

The Syrian-based Russian anti-aircraft systems couldn't pose any threat to Israel aircraft at least as they launched? Serious question, I'm far from an expert on these things. In any event, it will be one less option available to Israel in the event of an Israeli air attack on Iran's nuke facilities.

But still the question remains: why then is Russia sending anti-aircraft systems to Syria when neither ISIS nor the other groups there apparently have aircraft? Must be to use against NATO forces in some shape or form.

Because maybe the Russians still remember that the Chinese embassy was "accidentally" bombed by an American fighter bomber during NATO's Kosovo air war and don't want to be "accidentally" bombed this go around like the Chinese were.
