Once upon a time, American men used to get something called a "raise." That is when your employer would actually pay you more money. Now, it is true that some people still have experience with this all-but-forgotten practice, but even the ones who do tend not to get pay increases that keep up with price increases. That is why, as David Wessel of the Brookings Institution points out, the typical male worker actually saw his after-inflation pay fall between 1973 and 2014.
What is four lost decades between friends?
So why, as you can see below, have median male earnings flatlined over a time when the economy has doubled?

Senior Engineers in 1972 could make $30,000. Today that would be $274,000, but today engineers make around $125,000, and pay far more in taxes.
Demand, meet supply.
See Illegal Immigration.
That was old America.
In today's America if folks have jobs, instead of deserved pay raises people are given obtainable commissions, meaningless incentives, prizes and worthless Chinese produced trinkets in lieu of pay raises.
Yup.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone could “Make America Great Again”?!?!
Use to be some companies would give a cost of living increase and a merit increase. Those days are long, long gone.
“Seems impossible” to who? Not to anyone I know. Most employers will happily dump any long time 40+ employee for a twenty something who will work for half as much.
Bflr
I feel for the younger Americans who are subjected to this work-a-day meat grinder. Most will never be able to afford a new car or buy a home. They’ll be pigeon holed into one of those new 2000 unit mega civilian apartment barracks with the attractive facades and a fake patches of grass etc.
Eventually they'll "rent out" retail space for "commissioned retail workers" instead of employees. Employees can be messy and put a crimp in profits.
A win win for the wealthy foreigners who are buying up all the franchises.
Sounds like age discrimination which kicks in at age 40 workplace. You can be a protected class.
The modern pay raise is to switch employers.
“age discrimination”
It’s illegal, but pretty much impossible to prove. Especially if the new employee is hired for less money.
What do you think all this immigration is about?
It's about getting a large and reliable Democrat voting base. Libs don't really give a rip about Mexicans personally, ethnically or financially.
Sometimes you have to move out to move up.
The flip side is chamber-rinos get their cheap labor. Everybody is happy!
Yes, they do. And so do Democrats. Remember Tyson Chicken?
