Cruz: Excluding Muslims from presidency is unconstituional

It would be unconstitutional to disqualify a Muslim from the presidency because of religion, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Sunday.

“You know, the Constitution specifies there shall be no religious test for public office and I am a constitutionalist,” the Texas senator said during the taping of “Iowa Press” at Iowa Public Television.

Cruz was about Ben Carson’s televised statement that Islam is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.

Cruz also referred to the ongoing controversy raised in the media over whether Donald Trump should have corrected a man who incorrectly stated at a rally that President Obama is a Muslim and not an American. “My view, listen. The president’s faith is between him and God. What I’m going to focus on is his public policy record,” Cruz said.

One area in which Cruz did not mind excluding Muslims, however, was from the ranks of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in the United States. He said they should settle in other Middle Eastern countries, citing concerns that some of the purported refugees may actually be terrorists.

“I think the Christians are a very different circumstance because Christians are being persecuted, they are being persecuted directly for their faith and the Obama administration has abandoned Middle East Christians,” Cruz said.

Several other Republican presidential candidates weighed in on the issue of Syrian refugees Saturday during a forum in Des Moines. Mike Huckabee agreed with Cruz that the U.S. should exclude Muslim refugees but accept Christians. Rick Santorum argued that even the Christians should be assisted in the region so they can return home when the violence ends.

Following his visit at Iowa Public Television, Cruz visited with restaurant-goers at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale for more light-hearted discussions while Iowans enjoyed their morning brunch.

He us commenting on what he thinks Ben Carson said. Ben Carson said not one damn thing about government preventing Muslims from running for anything. So the premise of Cruz’ answer does not exist.

Why is this so hard?

"Do you really think if a President really wanted to do that, he would come right out and say, "I going to impose Sharia on America"? Of course not, he would be subtle about it, as Obama has been."

I think SOMEHOW people might notice, like when they went to the store to buy bacon or ham or beer, and those things were no longer available. Do you think the public would stand for that? Don't you think a president who ordered that - and somehow got a majority of Congress to agree!!! - would not see a second term, and that those laws would be repealed?

Huh? Why is Cruz even commenting on Carson's quote? Carson never said someone could be banned because they were muslim. He only said we, as a people, should not elect such a beast.

Ted, SHUT UP on this! They are trying to frame Republicans.

Oh boy. I do understand what Cruz is saying about the Constitution but Islam is an “ideology” filled with hate for Jews and Christians. Islam is NOT a religion. Please tell me Cruz didn’t pander.

I don't need my religion to tell me that abortion is a crime and there is no such thing as gay marriage.

I like to use this as a rule of thumb as to right and wrong: What if everyone did it.

There is only one answer...the human race would be wiped out.

He was asked a question about something Ben Carson said. He didn’t offer it.

I am glad Ben said what he did. He hasn’t got much to lose anyway.

How clever! I am guessing, based in how clever your response was, you are having difficulty finding the quote from Ben Carson. Bug surprise there.

It’s interesting the way socialists approach theological concepts but when it comes to Islam they are not the only ones who refuse to approach the issue. That even includes leading Christian clergy including Pope Francis.

Followers of Mohammed not only claim, but truly believe that God has authorized them to kill those who refuse to submit to their version of God’s will. That is a basic tenet of that religion. A claim which goes unchallanged. While it’s understandable for atheists which most socialists are, not to approach that claim on a theological basis. Because simply eliminatimg those who believe in its execution will not end its practice. Islam must be discredited and condemed.

It’s bewildering why many Christian clergy concerned about “political correctness “ refuse to address what an insult to God it is and worse yet are unable to condem then convince and convert its advocates and adhearants they are followers of an evil creed .

The Koran which was not given to Mohammed by God but by some angel .Demanding enforcement of sharia law which draws heavily from the Torah. It is a pseudo religious concoction using monotheistic selected texts, taken and misconstrued from the old .(bible) and new testaments. Both of which cite the Almighty has granted free will to accept or obey his laws and is the final judge not man. Sodom and Gormora , “Let he who is without sin cast the stone” are outstanding examples from both books. One deals with sin and God’s decision toward a group the other to an individual, neither is left to man.

Yet followers of Mohammed under the severest of penalties are forbidden to read either which would refute that assertion in a creed which institutionalizes disgusting arab tribal views, observances, mores and customs. Claiming adhearants are authorized by our Creator to demand submission to it or suffer an ignominious death administered by followers of Islam simply because they answer the call to prayer 5 times a day.

Cruz is right. We don’t have to vote for one, and that is why Obozo hid his religion. Now that he can’t be re-elected, I am wondering when he is going to announce his new religion, yada yada

Will it come before or after he announces that he is a flaming homosexual?

"Constitutional amendments need to be made that redefine what is a ‘religion’ and what is a ‘cult ‘ and thus not protected by 1st Amendment rights . " The federal government defining what is legitimate religion? Thousands of Old-fashioned Baptist churches, Biblicist Presbyterians, Biblicist Brethren churches, Bible churches, churches that make an honest attempt before God to obey the Bible under grace, churches with a high percentage of the membership home schooling their children, churches that teach the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, churches that believe that there will be an apocalyptic Tribulation period (i.e., Daniel's 70th Week) followed by a Messianic Kingdom . . . . . . .

These will ALL be labeled as cults by any government given the power to determine what is religion under the First Amendment.

No- Trump created the issue, Carson inflamed it; and Cruz put it to rest.

He might just be working with Trump to take Carson out of 2nd and 3rd place.

Honestly, after the debate and Carson showing support for minimum wage and weakness when it came to Ashcanistan, he took himself out.

I think he is a good man, but not what we need as president.

I think some of them are panicking over Trump saying he loves Muslims and would have no problem considering one for his cabinet or his ticket. So they think they’ve found a “gotcha” opportunity to try and attack Cruz’s remarks.
