This year, premiums in the marketplaces increased an average of 4 percent, in line with what is happening in the employer-based market. Contrast that with the year before the the act became law, 2009 to 2010, when premiums increased an average of “15 percent” for those who purchased coverage in the individual market for more than one year. The ACA marketplaces are creating more choices and competition which is one of the reasons why premiums are remaining relatively flat in the exchanges. This year, the number of insurers offering coverage in the marketplaces has increased 25 percent.
