The loss of her stepdaughter, Lori Ann Fiorina, to addiction in 2009. It may be unusual for a public figure to share such personal tragedies so openly, but death by drug overdose is not uncommon in the United States.
We need to tell young people the truth. Drug addiction is an epidemic, and it is taking too many of our young people, Fiorina said during the debate. My husband Frank and I buried a child to drug addiction.
Wednesdays debate was not the first time Fiorina brought up the death of her stepdaughter, whom she had known since Lori was six years old. Lori was a bouncy, happy and loving child, she wrote in her book "Rising to the Challenge," released in May. She was smart and hardworking.
Lori Ann Fiorina was just 35 years old when she died, and it remains unclear, at least publicly, what specific substances led to her death. But, Fiorina noted, The news wasnt completely unexpected. Lori had been battling addictions for years. She had done three stints in rehab, and even when she was a college student her parents feared she drank excessively.
But after Lori Fiorina graduated from college, she seemed to thrive. She found a job in sales, an apartment and a husband. Little did Fiorina and her husband know that their daughter had begun to abuse prescription drugs, even as she struggled with bulimia and alcoholism.
The former HP CEO turned that experience into a call for action during Wednesdays debate. I know there are millions of Americans out there who will say the same thing about having lost a child to addition, she said. We must invest more in the treatment of drugs.

give it a rest moron...
Lori lived with her mother - she didn’t live with Carly and her husband. She is exaggerating. However, having said that - I certainly am not going to rag on anyone who lost a child or even a step child as their grief is very real to them and I draw the line of these things.
“Leave her family out of the equation. There is plenty of Meat with HP, Lucent, odd Iran deals, unpleasant nature, etc. Leave her family out of this debate. I think folks know I am a pretty big Trump booster. Leave the daughters tragedy alone.”

You do understand that it was CARLY HERSELF WHO BROUGHT her husband’s dead daughter tragedy into “the equation”. Some of us understand your feelings but we understand that you are misdirecting your disgust...direct it at Carly if that is your want.
Why the bloody hell should it matter that it was her stepdaughter? You seem to be implying that, because they weren’t related by blood to her, that Carly should feel differently about these girls (whom she’d known since early childhood) than if she actually bore them. Should her death have mattered to her less because of that? I hope against hope that you don’t have stepchildren, or don’t know anyone with them, because if you do and can still say such things then you’re a really poor excuse for a human being.
A stepchild is still a child.
If you make illegal drugs legal, then what would be the difference? Her point is the threat. Plus, misuse of prescription drugs is illegal. This country has a huge problem with that.
The natural mother would naturally hate Carly as her ex-husbands wife. That is the way things work. i do not think Carly used her for political gain. Even if she did, that does not give us a right to do it, too, only in reverse.

This may be the most ignorant and just plain stupid discussions posted on FR since the start of Trump mania - and that is saying something, as moronic comments have been blowing around here like ragweed pollen for the last two months. How people who purport to be supporters of family values can spew such vile garbage perplexes me.
You must be sick. Why don’t you delete this thread. Really cheap.
Serious question to you: Do you have any children?
when in fact her stepdaughter was 35 years old at the time.
Thanks for straightening me out on the long term use damage.
I cant lie and say i’m bright enough to figure out the salt analogy :)
If you wrote it like you were talking to a fifth grader then i might have a chance lol
Well then tell that to the biological mother that was at the funeral of her child, and FURIOUS..., at Carly exploiting her child for political gain.
Carly implied she is for the war on illegal drugs because she and her husband lost their daughter to it. That’s simply not true. Her married 35 year old step child, that was 3000 miles away, died from LEGAL DRUGS...., and NOT ILLEGAL drugs as Carly gave her reason why she was for the war on illegal drugs.
Just admit she lied.
I’ve heard and read that Carly had been involved with her step daughter since 4 and in another place since age 6.
The daughter was 35 in 2009, which means she was born 1974.
Carly Fiorina Spouse(s)
Todd Bartlem (19771984)
Frank Fiorina (1985present)
I suppose perhaps they were all friends but it would appear to me that 1984 to 1985 the daughter would have been 10-ish. It doesn’t really matter I suppose but having a straight story might be nice. 4? 6? 10?
The biological mom is still alive, was at the funeral and is pissed at Carly for exploiting her child for political gain.
She keeps referring to her stepdaughter as her daughter in a way that suggests she raised her. But, in fact, the mother had custody. Yet Fiorina keeps referring to her as her own daughter and conveniently not mentioning the real mother.
See post #26
Carly is mentioning the fight against drug addiction, not necessarily the war on drugs.
See my posts on Lucent thread and HP thread. When my sister died of cancer my dad and I had to help my mom through it. If you have seen this kind of situation up close. You tread lightly. Doesn’t matter how the child died.
Exactly!
Thank you!
I agree. Dumbest argument ever.
