The mother of Fritz Moncion, the Linden, NJ high school football player who took the helmet of an opponent and hit him with it, spoke out on her son’s behalf and said the vicious hit, which caused ten stitches, was without intention and he is “very, very sorry” and is calling his punishment of being suspended from school, kicked off the team and potential criminal charges too severe.

“He’s a great kid. He really didn’t intentionally do this. He’s very hurt. He’s crying… To keep him off the team, I don’t think that is the answer,” MyCentralJersey.com reports Moncion’s said.

She added, “He’s going to apologize to the parents, to the school, to Linden, to the coaches formally.”

It's FOOTBALL? Please provide another example in the history of the game where player x took off player y's helmet and hit him over the head with it...causing 10 stitches...and just got a 15 yd penalty and a 1 game suspension.

An act is not made unintentional by rage or other extreme emotion. I’m reminded of a murder case where a murderer shot through and open window and hit his victim from the side: the bullet penetrated the victim’s arm, then entered the thoracic cavity where it tore apart the victim’s heart resulting in near instantaneous death.

The shooter claimed it was unintentional - that he only meant to shoot the victim in the arm. This defense went nowhere and the shooter for convicted of first degree murder.

In this case the attacker could only say that he meant to scare or intimidate the victim, that he never meant to do any serious harm, and who knows; he could be telling the truth. The thing is though, it doesn’t make any difference. No doubt the attacker meant to hit the victim with the helmet; whatever follows, he owns it.
