Trump backs 2nd Amendment, calls for national concealed carry
washingtontimes ^ | 9/18/2015 | Seth McLaughlin

GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump said Friday the government should expand gun rights for law-abiding citizens and focus more on cracking down on violent criminals and making sure guns don’t fall into the hands of the mentally ill. Mr. Trump made the arguments in a “position paper” on the Second Amendment in which he makes the case that people who don’t break the law should be able to obtain a concealed carry permit allowing them to carry in every state, and that members of the military should be able to carry their arms on military bases and at recruitment centers. He also voices his opposition to banning ammunition magazines. “The Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right that belongs to all law-abiding Americans,” Mr. Trump said in the paper. “The Constitution doesn’t create that right — it ensures that the government can’t take it away. Our Founding Fathers knew, and our Supreme Court has upheld, that the Second Amendment’s purpose is to guarantee our right to defend ourselves and our families. This is about self-defense, plain and simple.” The New York billionaire is polling first nationally, as well as in Iowa and New Hampshire, which hosts the first two nomination contests. In his position paper, Mr. Trump advocates for national concealed carry. “A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving — which is a privilege, not a right — then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege,” he said. Mr. Trump said the nation’s mental health system has allowed people who should not have guns to obtain them.

Good. He’s changing the narrative for the weekend to the 2nd Amendment!

Expand gun rights? Like beyond the 2nd Amendment?

No. People do not Constitutionally need a permit to concealed carry, or to carry open.

“the right of the people to keep AND BEAR arms shall not be infringed...

requiring a permit is an infringement..
even more so when the author intends that such permits might be denied to some people

Trump: ““A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving — which is a privilege, not a right — then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.”

You have to hand it to Trump. He can really boil down an issue to its simplest and most understandable level as well compare contrast it to other situations where just makes sense to the average American.

If you want to go that far, take it another step. The 1968 GCA, which made it a federal offense for a felon to possess a firearm, is also unconstitutional. If you cannot trust an ex-con with a gun, they should never be released from jail.

BFAC, what do you think about our CIC appointing an openly gay Secretary of the Army?

Food for Thought:

If the 2nd Amendment was interpreted the same was as ALL OTHERS, It would be MANDATORY that Every Person had a gun from Birth

I do want to go “that far”

our Republic’s Founders knew there were criminals in the world

they determined that there are far worse things than some criminals having firearms (WHICH THEY ALWAYS CAN AND DO GET, VERY VERY EASILY, ANYWAY...laws or no laws)....

far worse things like dictatorships being imposed on the American people (imagine that!!!!)

and of course, millions of people (including, yes, those who have served their debt to society) being rendered defenseless

“...the right of the people (not SOME people) to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed (no registration, no background checking, no licenses, no fees, no limitations, no permits, no government restrictions or involvement whatsoever)

Trump may not be extra-ordinarily intelligent, but it is becoming obvious every day, he has extra-ordinary common sense. Without it, no one can build a fortune greater than $1,000,000,000 in the main street real economy (as opposed to paper shuffling on Wall Street).

Agreed.

While I understand 2A is about defending against tyranny, I would also go as far to say that if the person has done their time and turned around they should have the right to protect themselves.

I was watching The First 48, a cop show about trying to solve murders in the first 48 hours. An ex-con used a gun in self defense, a point no one disagreed with, but the cops arrested him anyway for possessing a firearm. How screwed up is it that a man goes to jail for defending his life? It could have been the life of another person but the law makes no exception.

Exactly. The left says requiring an ID to vote is infringement on the 14th Amendment. What about the 2nd?
