Most Senior Citizens Have Vitamin D Deficiencies
RTT News ^ | 2015 September 17 | RTT Staff

Most seniors may suffer from some degree of vitamin D deficiency, according to a study from researchers at University of California at Davis and Rutgers University. For the study the researchers surveyed 400 men and women with an average age of 76 in either good health or with mild cognitive impairment.

They found that nearly all of the participants showed low levels of vitamin D with 26 percent displaying a deficiency and 35 percent show what they classified as insufficiency.

"This work, and that of others, suggests that there is enough evidence to recommend that people in their 60s and older discuss taking a daily vitamin D supplement with their physicians," says Joshua Miller of Rutgers. "Even if doing so proves to not be effective, there's still very low health risk to doing it."

Charles DeCarli, director of the Alzheimer's Disease Center at UC Davis adds, "We expected to see declines in individuals with low vitamin D status. What was unexpected was how profoundly and rapidly [low vitamin D] impacts cognition."

I agree. I overdid it as a kid myself.

Good post. Let me expand on a couple of things. One, don’t take k2 every day, only about 3 x per week.

Two, a fascinating tidbit of information is that when we are stressed out, whether by an external event or internal event (sickness, under nourished, etc), the very first thing our adrenal glands do is purge our 2 relaxing minerals, which are magnesium and zinc. They do this because of the fight or flight they are preparing you for. But, when we purge those 2 extremely important minerals, and then do not replenish them, it sets us up for major problems. As I said earlier, being mineral deficient (under nourished) is also a cause for stress, so the vicious cycle continues.

We can’t get enough mag from our food or water now so it is imperative that we supplement with it and it must be the right kind to be effective.

God bless you and may He help you in your life. Hate and rage can really be a terrible burden. The kind of burden that carrying it around isn’t what they mean by aerobic excercise!

You know, after reviewing my comment to you, I thought I owed you a bit more. I’m sorry you’ve had those bouts with skin cancer and wish you all the best overcoming the problem.

Hope all is well with you now.

Regards.

Interesting. I’ll look into that. I didn’t really study the cholesterol numbers because the doctor just said they were “very good”... which may mean exactly what you were talking about.

Instead of 50,000IU once a month you could try 10,000IU once or even twice a week (definitely check with your doctor on this regimen) with B12 (sublingual should suffice, use better absorbing methylcobalamin form instead of cyanocobalamin) and highly bioavailable form of magnesium supplement (your fatigue is a classic sign of insufficient B12 and magnesium - see post #97 on magnesium depletion while taking large doses of Vitamin D).

Definitely run this by your doctor, so he can monitor it.

Thank you, I will. Interesting you mention the B12 and Magnesium. My daughter and I both get Migraines. I didn’t think I got them enough to warrant a visit to the Neurologist but my daughter was getting them quite frequently. She didn’t want to take a prescription so the doctor prescribed B12 and Magnesium which she says has helped a lot. Maybe a genetic thing?

It's not impossible, but unlikely. More likely, similar lifestyle and diets lacking in foods which are supplying B12, (e.g., beef, liver etc., which is why vegans usually use B12 and other supplements) and sufficient amount of absorbable magnesium (e.g., magnesium oxide is the most popular form sold in stores, but nearly useless, except for softening / laxative effect, because less than 7% of it is actually absorbed by the body.)

Magnesium also has certain smooth muscle-relaxing effect, so that's another way it might help alleviate muscle pain and reduce instances of tension / migraine headaches.

Thank you for the info. I thought of the hereditary angle because I have two children, one being adopted. And the husband. We all have basically the same diet and only the biological daughter and I the migraines.

you want k2. I think Thorne has a good liquid; put drops under the tongue. The key to the D absorption though is the mag

Thanks! I used to get Dr. Mercola’s daily email at work. Now that I am retired, I will sign up again from my home email. I like him :)

There are cities that have no sunshine for many days, sometimes for a whole week or more, especially in winter. Bodies of water are often the culprit.

I agree. Obviously, if you have the opportunity, it’s not a bad thing to do.

I’m not sure how folks can live in an environment where you don’t get sunny days a lot. I appreciate sunny days.
