Leslie Moonves and CBS Staff Heard Dismissing Robert Redford's Dan Rather Movie as "Half-Truth"
Hollywood Reporter ^ | September 16, 2015 | by Matthew Belloni

Before its acclaimed premiere at TIFF, 'Truth' — about the scandal that ended the anchor's CBS News career — was screened for a special viewer: CBS president and CEO Moonves, who was not impressed.

Truth, director James Vanderbilt's drama about the "Memogate" scandal that ended Dan Rather's CBS News career, was touted as a world premiere at Toronto. Rather himself turned up at the event to praise the film's accuracy and its (very sympathetic) portrayal of him.

CBS mostly comes across as the villain in Truth, with news chief Andy Heyward appearing to fire Rather (Robert Redford) and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) to appease the George W. Bush White House and protect CBS' bottom line in the wake of questions regarding documents behind a 2004 story on Bush's military service. The film downplays Rather's role in the reporting that led to the scandal and suggests that the attacks on the 60 Minutes II report were politically motivated.

A source close to the film says Moonves wasn't a fan of Truth, but, ever the gentleman, he didn't ask producers for major changes, and a CBS source says the network isn't planning to publicly lash out at Sony Pictures Classics' Oct. 16 release (any challenge from those depicted would only provide more publicity for the film, of course).

Still, Moonves and staff were heard at CBS headquarters dismissing the movie as "half truth." CBS declined to comment.

But it turns out the movie was shown months earlier to a special viewer: CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves. And the reaction was less than effusive.

Of course Redford would think DNCBS would bow to the Bush WH.
That there should be enough to convince anyone this is fiction.

Because it makes Moonves and CBS look bad for firing him.

Alex, I’ll take “The Bleedin’ Obvious” for a thousand.

The suits at CBS are being generous in calling the film “Half Truth.” A better title would be “Lies and Deceit,” or as someone else suggested, “Fake and Inaccurate.”

Interesting little side note about the aftermath that didn’t get enough publicity. After Les Moonves and Andrew Heyward decided to fire Rather—and the Thornburgh-Boccardi Report gave them more than enough ammunition—the CBS chairman was visited by none other than Walter Cronkite. The legendary CBS anchor congratulated Moonves for making the “right” decision. To be fair, Cronkite never liked Rather—too much of a showboat, and besides, “The Dan’s” elevation to the anchor chair pushed Uncle Walter into an early retirement.

But Cronkite (who would never be mistaken for a conservative) knew that Rather’s story was patently false and it seriously damaged what little integrity CBS News still had. Of course, the Cronkite-Moonves meeting would never make it into a film like “Truth,” and I’m sure that Mr. Thornburgh (a former PA governor and U.S. attorney general) and Mr. Boccardi (long-time head of the Associated Press) will be depicted as corporate hacks, shills, or worse.

The fact that “Truth” was made—and claims to live up to its name—is more proof of how far the news and entertainment industries have fallen. Rather and Mapes were nothing more than politically-motivated liars and they almost got away with it, until Buckhead did his work and started a revolution.

Unfortunately, the left is very good at rewriting history, and this film will be shown again and again until is becomes the “accepted” version of events.

If Blanchett had an honest bone in her body, she would not have accepted a role that portrays that Mapes in a positive light.

Eh, what does she care? She's British. British AND Hollywood, which makes her a lefty times 2.

Karl Rove wrote the offending document as a way of obfuscating the truth in this situation: Bush was drunk and AWOL .

Rove’s the king of dirty tricks, especially with faked documents on the campaign trail, and he’s been laughing at us ever since for not realizing what a problem Bush faced in 04 with a veteran like Kerry — during the Iraq war.

“Nice alligator shoes, Bob.” Rather
“But I’m not wearing shoes.” Redford

I like post 48 myself:

Seems to well orchestrated. Of course it was orchestrated. The same night that 60 Minutes runs a hit piece of lies and the same day lies are printed in the Boston Globe and NY Slimes. Hmmmm. It does not take Sherlock to figure out that Carville, the same guy who holds his post at CNN, is behind all this with the Kerry campaign. Its only going to get worse.

Yeah, and you have the forged documents to prove it. Also, Kerry’s war record wasn’t as stellar once it was put out for review.

>>NO CGIs.<<

I would not be so sure. The last time I saw video of Redford IRL, he looked like he died 10 years ago. I suspect his entire performance was CGI.

Once you understand Rove’s objective, his motive becomes obvious.

Rove sicced Steve Schmidt to rally the Swift Boaters for truth to nail Kerry.

Have you read “Family of Secrets” The Bush Dynasty? You might learn something. Written by the guy who was on a pay phone with his LA Times editor screaming about the towers when Building Seven collapsed in front of him.

Do a little research on Rove to see how he played us conservatives over the faked Bush National Guard documents. Fake documents are his specialty.

Tinfoil hat on, tuning in...go.

I am from Massachusetts, hence I already knew enough and seen enough of John Kerry to not for him. In fact I can’t think of any reason a conservative would vote for Kerry.

If that is the case here then you might be at the wrong website.

The swift boaters and Dan Rather may have dissuaded Democrats for voting for John Kerry but they did not change any conservative votes. No way, no how.

I guess you don’t know who Steve Schmidt is? And what damage he has done to conservatism along with Rove? Kerry is just the left side of the Uniparty coin. Rove manufactured the Bush Nat’l Guard documents so as to create a diversion from the real story: Bush was AWOL. Rove knew and probably leaked the documents were fake (because he faked them!)... as a diversion.

And Rove’s diversion worked. Sympathy was swept to Bush over the “attack” of Rather, instead of analyzing Bush’s idiotic record.

Tinfoil hat is tilting!!!

Look, campaign strategist use dirty tricks. Look-up how Obama became a state senator or anything connected to a Clinton campaign.

My bio says am a freeper since 2008 but I actually go back to 1999. I lost my password in a job-move and this is my second name.

If you want to talk dirty tricks about the TANG memos then read this. Mary Mapes called Joe Lockhart before the CBS TANG memos news story aired to put the Kerry campaign in touch with Bill Burkett. The New York Times, Boston Globe and CNN all coordinated together the next day with headlines of Bush AWOL stories. This would go on for weeks until it was obvious the memos were forged and then only a small retraction on page 10. Nothing on the front page about forged memos from a politically connected reporter (Rather’s daughter is a Texas Democrat official). This fake story was a coordinated attack set-up by the democrat party to throw an election. It only backfired because old school dopes like Rather didn’t even know about the internet.

I am no Rove fan but he seems to be good at his job which is getting his guy elected.

I repeat no conservative was ever going to cast a vote for John Kerry. I have lived in Massachusetts all my life and have never voted for him. Go out and find these conservatives who would have cast a vote for Kerry.

Here’s a post about your hero John Kerry and his service record. By the way they have not been made public and only select reporters from the Boston Globe were allowed to review them. Could be a conspiracy in there don’t you think?

Half truth? That’s about as accurate as any of these movies get.
