I agree with you, the message has to come from within, no white person is going to be able to deliver it. But that community seems so invested in blaming everyone else but themselves that whenever a black man comes out and says anything against the community they are instantly called an “Uncle Tom”. I have hope for his message but the reality is that i wouldn’t be shocked to see people attack Sherman too.
Of course some, many, most will. But even if Sherman amounts only to “a voice calling in the wilderness,” it’s still more than a start, because (a) his is not a lone voice, and (b) he has gained standing to speak it. It’s the old story of a man walking on the beach who encounters a young boy tossing stranded starfish back into the surf. “You can’t possibly save all these—there are thousands!” “Maybe not, but I can save this one, and this one, and this one...”
