Tricycle injuries send thousands of kids to ER each year

Tricycles might seem pretty tame but they send thousands of kids to emergency rooms each year and are even linked to a handful of deaths, new research shows. Here are three things to know about tricycle risks:

THE NUMBERS

More than 9,000 tricycle-related injuries were treated in U.S. emergency rooms in 2012 and 2013, or nearly 5,000 each year, according to the study by researchers at Medical College of Georgia and Emory University.

THE ADVICE

The American Academy of Pediatrics says most children don't have the balance or coordination to ride a tricycle until around age 3.

Tricycles that are low to the ground, with big wheels, are safest, and helmets should be worn, the academy says. Proper supervision is advised, including keeping little cyclists away from pools and streets.

Tricycles are more dangerous than guns ... they kill and injure more children ... we need a Federal law to register tricycles ... and make kids wear helmets ... then ban and confiscate them ... especially the high-rider assault trikes!

But tricycles are not a threat to the elites’ power,
so they will be ignored.

Registration...gotta have that, too. It's the only solution.

Kids just aren’t as tough. In 1964 I rode mine down a flight of concrete steps with no long term effects. I think.

And what’s with the Big Wheels thing??? Civilians don’t need wheels that big.

As the eldest of 9 (7 boys, 2 girls) I can attest that NONE of us ever went to the ER for tricycle OR bicycle injuries.

All in the pre-helmet years!

Scrapes, bumps, bruises,....wash it off, ice, Band-Aid....

One brother broad sided a van while he was blasting down hill and even he didn’t go to the ER.

We must impose a 2 wheel maximum for tricycles. Nobody needs more than two wheels on a tricycle!

Just what we need, a new federal agency: The Dept. of Trike and Bike Safety. The fat cat bureaucrats there will require that all such methods of transportation have seat belts and air bags. They will cost $10,000, and there will be fewer accidents because few families will be able to afford them. Another mission accomplished for the nanny staters.

It's the configuration that is the problem. High profile ones have a high center of gravity.

Put that seat down near the ground and the handlebars up high. Use low profile wide tires that can slide a bit, not bite and cause a flip. The problem is pretty much resolved.

You've got to work at it to roll one of these.

I am 70 years old ,,, I sometimes wonder how I survived so long living in this mine field we call every day life . A crack in the sidewalk can also cause a serious injury . Get a grip you pack of liberal panty weight pansies ,, accidents will happen .

All they need is speed governors that keep them to about 3mph. The electric ones do that.

I remember my mom yelling at me for parking behind her car. She'd back over it and fear that I was still on it.
