43% of Republicans could imagine supporting a military coup in the United States.
A law professor at West Point was forced to hastily resign after it emerged that he had authored a number of controversial articles. In one he suggested that legal scholars defending the rights of suspected terrorists could be considered legitimate military targets, while in another he examined a potential military coup in the United States, arguing that officers may have a duty to sieze control of the federal government if the federal government acted against the interest of the country. The United States military has long embraced the idea of civilian control of national affairs, and apart from certain rare moments the American officer corps has faithfully followed the orders of their civilian superiors.
YouGov's latest research shows, however, that officers in the military are held in much greater esteem than their civilian superiors, and that they are widely viewed as having the best interests of the country in mind instead of their own selfish concerns. 70% of Americans believe that military officers generally want what is best for the country. When it comes to Congressmen, however, 71% of Americans believe that they want what is best for themselves, along with 59% for local politicians....

It could but it would take a lot of right planning.
Ask JFK
“It could but it would take a lot of right planning”.
Hopefully that’s why it hasn’t happened.....yet.
This is why next year’s presidential elections is going to be very, very important. It will decide if this country can get rebuilt.
Protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.
That is why civil disobedence is going to make a big come back.
A military coup would be a really bad idea.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, etc.
I can’t envision a military government that wouldn’t insist on disarming the populus.
On the other hand, it might be time to consider the benefits of a loose-knit confederacy of right-wing death squads. :-)
Your comment is hereby nominated for post of the day. A chilling, but factual, list.
We could only be so lucky.
Keep your boys home.
I have said it before and I will say it now: I can’t believe it hasn’t already happened.
I’d change the fourth line to “Congress has abdicated its reponsibilities.”, becusae it’s abdicated more than legislative duty. See too court oversight via impeachment, advise & consent on treaties. There is also what appears to be a contrary point - Congressional overstepping of constitutional limitations on federal power. See Obamacare and literally thousands of pages of regulation in education, environment, energy and other fields.
Been there, done that. See Watergate.
I’d personally like a french revolution II approach where the entire power structure is taken, ruined, jailed, shamed, made to bark like dogs, and the whole place is re-set. Politicians, media, lobbyists, etc. Retribution being a great theme. It’s a dream however.
All true. However, that is not a military coup. That is a civilian/bureaucratic coup.
Or as Obama the Mulatto Mussolini would call it, a coop!
I don’t see a coup in the outing. I think there is a higher probability of a rogue administration trying to stage a coup through martial law and the military not playing.
