Train them WRONG...

That is what i would do.

I personally know 3 people with similar IT positions. They were faced with similar situations. These three people chose your coarse of action.

They were called in to management offices, and summarily fired for cause.

Being fired for cause meant the following:

No severance package.
No exit bonus.
No letter of recommendation or references.
No access to company sponsored job placement services.
and most importantly, NO UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION.

That's the reality of what happens in the IT field when you do not properly train your own replacement.

I’ve known a couple of folks who in a similar position were able to find employment with another company very soon after they were given notice that their job would be eliminated in 60 (I believe that was the time period) days. The company that was laying people off was not happy and threatened to withhold payout of unused vacation time, favorable reference, etc - but what did they expect people to do - give up on another job offer?
