Canada less welcoming to refugees under Harper's leadership

Canada has long prided itself for opening its doors wider than any nation to asylum seekers, but the number it welcomes has waned since Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper took power almost 10 years ago.

Harper has rejected calls to take immediate action to resettle more Syrian refugees, despite the haunting image of a drowned 3-year-old washed up on a Turkish beach that has focused the world's attention on the largest refugee crisis since World War II.

Canada denied initial, inaccurate reports that it had rejected a refugee application for the boy's immediate family, but the story landed in the middle of an election campaign and forced Harper's party to cancel events and address what Canada is doing for asylum seekers.

Canada has the best of all worlds. They know that their Ministry of Defense Headquarters is located in Arlington,Virginia so they needn’t spend much defending their huge, sparsely populated country. They know they have a 2000 mile wide buffer zone separating them from the Third World so illegals needn’t be a big issue. They speak English, the world’s primary language of prosperity, civility and stability. They have no history of slavery so little,or no,racial strife. And they’re awash in natural resources.

Harper has a brain and some sense of self preservation.

the largest refugee crisis since World War II.

More than fled Vietnam and Southeast Asia after Kerry and the Democrats abandoned those people to communism? I doubt it.

Canada has the best of all worlds.

Not entirely, there's serious drawbacks too.

First off, 1/4 of the country doesn't speak English, but French. And they like to play this perpetual game of threatening to separate if they don't get more bribes. You guys don't have anything like that.

Then there's the general bleeding-heart mentality that votes for idiots like the the NDP and Liberal Party, and opposes the oil sands and any fighting against ISIS.

Not to mention the multiculturalism policy, which discourages assimilation, and encourages a focus on the differences between various ethnic groups - a recipe for non-unity.

Out-of-control PC, high taxes, complacent citizens, big government ... it goes on ....

at least there's some nice scenery ....

Why doesn’t China, Inda, Japan or Southeast Asia take in a couple hundred thousand refugees for a change?

Your post #8 noted.

"Canada has a more sane immigration policy under Harper"

Nice to get a bit of praise once in a while from a Freeper. There will always be a bit of give and take while two great democratic nations live side by side. I know some Freepers are doom and gloom over the last eight years of an obvious agenda. Still, the basics of a return to a more original and patriotic state are there.

The Canadian main stream media has played it to the hilt to paint an adverse picture. This over a squeaky clean Prime Minister, who is a good family man. The bottom line which none of the leftists dare deal with, these questions.

Will you be affected by a massive influx of refugees? Are your hospitals strained to the limits now? Is the housing ratio of reasonable rentals and low cost housing high or low? How much accommodation is your neighbourhood going to supply the new refugees if needed?

Oh boy, a bit of a ramble. Have a great labour day weekend.

Why do these refugees have to cross an ocean to find somewhere to settle? They are surrounded by Muslim countries, why not settle there? Oh ... I forgot. The dirty little secret no one is supposed to mention.
