GOP Needs To Show Loyalty To Conservatives

After weeks of pressuring from the Republican National Committee (RNC) to sign a “loyalty pledge,” GOP frontrunner Donald Trump finally acquiesced and signed the document on Thursday. He announced the decision at a press conference at Trump Tower in New York City after meeting with RNC Chairman Reince Preibus.

The “loyalty” issue has been extremely important to GOP leadership, who were terrified that Trump would run as a third party candidate in the 2016 election and doom their chances of victory. Previously, Trump expressed an interest in exploring a third party bid only if the RNC treated him poorly. He said that it gave him “leverage” in the upcoming race. Obviously, at this point, Trump must feel that he does not need the leverage and is confident of victory. The latest polls now show Trump at 30% support, with a double digit lead over his nearest challenger.

Now that Trump has signed this pledge, it is time that the RNC finally show some loyalty to the base of their party, the conservatives. It is quite ironic that a group that has been incredibly unfaithful and disloyal to conservatives would demand a loyalty pledge from the leading candidate.

In recent years, the Republican establishment vigorously opposed the goals of the Tea Party, while happily receiving donations and volunteer support from grassroots conservatives. Clearly, conservatives and Tea Party members are the backbone of the Republican Party, yet the RNC continues to treat them as the enemy, with more hostility than they treat liberal Democrats. This also extends to Tea Party candidates, who have attempted to move the party in a more conservative direction, but have been subjected to ridicule and contempt by the Republican establishment and targeted for defeat.

The GOP doesn’t need to show loyalty to conservatives.

They just don’t. The GOP does what it wants to do. We pretend they represent conservatives, but they don’t.

When was the last time any one of them in power, including the Bushes, said anything about admiring Reagan? Just for instance.

Slightly off topic, but reading a story about being true to conservative values, on a site using Facebook for the comments, drives me nuts.

Show loyalty by CLOSING ALL PRIMARIES! Like here in Ohio!

It is impossible for THIS GOP to show loyalty to conservatives.
Their agenda is in direct opposition to what conservatives want.
They are a wholly owned subsidiary of The Cheap Labor Express.
Their sole purpose is to prevent us from electing anyone who would enforce the laws and borders.

We pretend they represent conservatives, but they don’t.

Exactly right. We seem to be content with appearance over substance. The GOP is big on talk, but small in results. The simple fact is the GOP does little if anything to ever promote the conservative agenda.

If I was a Democrat, I would thank my lucky stars everyday for the GOP’s weakness, lack of conviction, and willingness to turn its back on its own base. Nothing better than having a weak “opponent” to push around.

The GOP doesn’t really care about loyalty. Its only cares about controlling people. Priebus pulled a clever move on Trump; the so-called “loyalty oath” is nothing more than a power tactic to start the process of reining Trump in.

In my opinion, Trump should have asked the GOP to first sign an oath to its voting base that outlines its support for the framework of a specific conservative agenda. Trump should have insisted on a quid pro quo with the GOP. First you sign an oath to the GOP voter, then I’ll sign an oath to the party if I agree with the agenda.

GOPers are embarrassed by conservatives. We’re like the crazy relatives kept shut up in a room and trotted out only when absolutely necessary.

He’s supposed to be the great negotiator. I like Trump, but if he cannot bend the GOP one wonders if he’s a good as he claims to be. This was a golden opportunity for him to use political jujutsu and capitalize on the GOP’s blatant attempt to control him.

Those perceived “crazy relatives” gave the GOP control of the House and Senate.

"Those perceived “crazy relatives” gave the GOP control of the House and Senate."

Very true, but they don't give a damn. And look at what they've done with their win---nothing.

I read in Ted Cruz's book about the tips and strategies the GOP shares with new arrivals in Washington on how to LOOK like they're actually doing something so the people back home will vote for them again. They are shameless.

The GOP-e, in its arrogance, has set up *its* candidates to get busted.

“Mr. Bush, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

“Mr. Graham, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

“Mr. Kasich, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

“Mr. Rubio, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

“Mr. Christie, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

“Mr. Pataki, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

“Ms. Fiorina, will you publicly state that if you lose in the primary, you will still fully support the winning Republican candidate?”

Well give him a chance, or do you expect immediate results like yesterday or perhaps a month ago. Stop being so impatient.

Really?
The general attitude of the GOP-E is, “Where else are the conservatives going to go?”
“Are you gonna stay home or vote for a Third Party and let Hillary! or Warren or Biden or Sanders or whoever win?”
And then, when the Democrat DOES win the GOP Doormats will run around accusing conservatives of “throwing” the election.

The GOP wants get Trump on the slippery slope. A little thing here, another little thing there. Trust me, the byzantine world of Washington DC is loaded with treacherous and clever political operatives. Negotiating a business deal does not approach the complexity of political machinations, no matter what Trump says. He needs to recognize he’s playing in a different league now.

I don’t want to see Trump succumb to manipulation by the very powerful and crafty political interests in the GOP. You can NEVER underestimate your opponents or let them get a foothold on your mountain. So to your point, its not really a matter of impatience; its more a matter of being pro-active, understanding your enemy and its motives, and not allowing them to flank you.

Do you think Reince Priebus represents the interests of conservatives? Just curious.

To be successful in politics, you have to be an accomplished (and shameless) liar and deceiver. If you weren’t when you came to Washington, you soon will be if you want to say there. Politics is a game of deception and political opportunism.
