Post 50 clearly show’s two thing’s, the protetors were blocking street access with the banner and the man who assaulted the guard was not holding the sign, so does the tail end of the video in the link the OP posted.
It can get pretty complicated, but generally, if he was determined to have been the aggressor (by taking the sign in the first place), then it would be very difficult for the security guard to show that he was justified.
Something like this would have to be sorted out in court. But, given the relatively minor nature of the altercation all around, I doubt either side would actually press charges. So it’s all likely hypothetical.
This thread - where you proclaim your absolute ignorance in public - should be required reading for your clients.

In New York? Frankly, the cops have better things to deal with than the BS in the video, from both sides. If either side called the cops, they may come and take a report, but no charges would be filed against either guy. No NYPD officers, and certainly no Manhattan ADAs have time to deal with that crap.
Could be. Of course, the other issue at play is that the protester may well be here illegally (I've seen people assuming he is, but no evidence either way). If he's illegal, he would very likely not press charges, since it could theoretically expose him to a risk of deportation (again, depending on his status).
The New York statute that authorizes the use of force to stop a larceny doesn't require that the person using force be the victim of the larceny (which makes sense - for example, if you witness a purse-snatching and then tackle the guy running away with the purse, you're protected by the law). So, the fact that the sign was stolen from someone else in the group, rather than the guy who tried to get it back, doesn't matter.
