If true, then the guard committed a strong armed robbery.

I don't think there is any question about it. I watched the video 3x at slow speed pausing it at the spot where it clearly shows the guard holding the sign. I don't think jumping on the guard's back was the proper response, he should have called the police.

Should we here on Free Republic condone that behavior simply because we like the candidate that this guy is supposed to be protecting?

No we shouldn't.

Excuse me you think the guard having the sign is a crime, but laying hands on the guard is just “not the appropriate response?” Perspective please, a guard takes your sign you do NOT have the right to jump him. You want to yell at him, you want to sue him, have a party. Assaulting a guard to a presidential candidate is not a good idea.
