YANKTON, SD - A 19-year-old is facing multiple attempted murder charges and a Yankton police sergeant is on administrative leave. This comes after an officer-involved shooting in downtown Yankton Tuesday night that closed 3rd Street for several hours in the heart of the city.
Trae Angel is facing four counts each of attempted murder and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer.
South Dakota Attorney Marty Jackley says police were first tipped off when they got a domestic violence call involving a gun late last night in Yankton.
When they got to the home, Angel was gone, prompting a city wide search.
An hour-long search for the armed suspect ended when Angel was found in an alley near Pine and Capital on 3rd Street around 10:00 p.m.
That's when the Yankton teenager allegedly had a gun when he was shot by Yankton Police Sergeant Jason Foote. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley spoke to KELOLAND News from Pierre.
"At this point, obviously it's an ongoing investigation. We are talking to witnesses and looking at potential video footage and trying to piece together what happened in Yankton last night," Jackley said.
Jackley said Angel was hurt during the domestic situation before he was shot by Foote. The teen is being treated for his injuries and is expected to survive.
This is the 19th police-involved shooting in six years.
"Here in South Dakota, we have been fortunate that the incidences that have involved police using force have been justified through those investigations, whether it be through video, witnesses, or other factors," Jackley said.
Jackley's office is investigating if the shooting was justified. A report is expected within the next 30 days.
In the meantime, the sergeant has been placed on administrative leave.

You should know by now, if the media specifically doesn’t say, they’ve told you.
It's unanimous.

“Another adult teen”
