Unemployed More Likely To Shop, Watch TV, or Play Sports Than Look For a Job

Unemployed individuals in America are more likely to go shopping, watch TV, or play sports on an average day than to look for a new job, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Less than one in five of America’s unemployed, or 18.2 percent, participated in job search and interview activities on an average day, according to the BLS data from the American Time Use Survey.

Yet 40.8 percent of the unemployed shopped on the average day by store, telephone, or Internet. Of those who shopped, 21.5 percent of those shopped for items other than groceries, food, or gas.

Most of the unemployed, 83.7 percent, watched television or movies on an average day.

About one in four of the unemployed, or 24.6 percent, participated in or watched sports, exercise, or recreation activities on an average day.

According to the BLS, the unemployed are individuals who do not have a job but have actively sought one in the past four weeks. The bureau’s Time Use Survey measures the amount of time the unemployed spend doing various activities.

Although the unemployed are defined as those who are actively looking for a job, this may not be the most time-consuming activity they participate in on an average day and on some days they may not participate in the activity at all.

To determine the percentage of the population who participated in an activity on an average day, the BLS interviewed respondents about how they spent their time on the previous day, where they were and whom they were with. The most recent data from the BLS takes the average for the combined years from 2010 to 2014.

The BLS also calculates how many hours a day the unemployed participate in these activities. The BLS found that those participating in job search and interviewing activities spent an average of 2.63 hours per day on them.

Unemployed individuals spent an average of 5.83 hours on socializing, relaxation, and leisure activities; 3.76 hours watching television and movies; 2.05 hours active in sports, exercise, and recreation activities; and 1.1 hours shopping for items other than food or gas.

“Most of the unemployed, 83.7 percent, watched television or movies on an average day. “

As do most Americans. What a vacuous statistic.

This is to denigrate people who have lost their livelihoods to legitimize the foreign invasion.

It doesn’t take you long to figure out if anyone is hiring in your industry. If they are, you call them and send a resume. That doesn’t take a lot of time.

If they aren’t, you go for a walk to the mall.

And we're still bringing in 2 million newcomers a year to replace us. Every year.

Outside of the fact that, I think most, if not all, newly jobless make a sincere attempt to re-instate an income .. with the passage of time, new habits are formed, new incomes are established and new lifestyles become prevalent and it is a natural thing for man to NOT work ........ If for no other reason than God SAID you will work, and you ain't goin' by what no God you can't see and certainly hasn't done anything for YOU lately, tells you what to do

Y'got food, the rent, and TV ... the ol lady's happy ... f### it.

And therein is the problem. Let's adopt the German system: If you are on any kind of assistance, unemployment or welfare, you show up every morning at 7AM to clean toilets, sweep the street, or whatever the agency tells you to. If you show up for public work one out of five days, you get one-fifth of your stipend. While some people simply won't change, I think many will invest in themselves and try to find a better-paying job.

I was laid off 12 times over the course of 50 years of work. Most were government contracts. I don’t recall being a slouch, and spent at least 6 hours a day looking for new work.

Then again I always found work quickly. Not sure what newer generations are expecting.

Putting exercise with “watching sports” bugged me too. Lots of job search literature discusses exercise. It’s encouraged to help keep a positive routine as well as helping you feel better.

Not as many as illegals who are sucking off Americans with their anchor babies! Just go to a Home Depot, those crapheads demand $15 an hour tax free and then get tax refunds after never ever working on the books to top it off.

Need to drill that exact sentiment into the BLM crowd and let nature take its course.

Don’t give me indigestion this late.

They stand to get up to SIX THOUSANDS dollars back WITHOUT being on the books if they have enough kids.

I forget what they call it, but I know it’s true.

Country has LOST ITS MIND.

How ANY sane working (on the books) person of any color or ethnicity can vote for demonrats is beyond me!!

That’s what happens when you feed and give free stuff to people with no effort on their part...

Funny how feeding the wild life is illegal in the national parks... And the reason for that is??? And that is different how???
