Maybe. But I’m not seeing the pro-tariff FReepers advocating tariffs in place of income tax.

I've only posted those sentiments about 1,000 times.

Oddly when push comes to shove, if made to choose, Free Traitors™ always pick income taxes over tariffs.

Conagra and Cargill and the other corn syrup producers are behind the continuation of sugar tariffs. Globally the syrups are not competitive. The only way they make corn syrup the lower priced option is to have the government tax imports of cane sugar. Most food producers prefer cane sugar. Most consumers prefer cane sugar. It is why you see Mexican Coke in the grocery store Hispanic section. Try it some time in a blind A/B test with American Coke. It just plain tastes better. I wont go into why beet sugar sucks, but for the record... it does. (Once a buyer for a packaged food manufacturer and once a veg oil trader in a trading company specializing in sugar - we did physicals, not just paper) I know the dollars and cents of this. I know the politics. I even know where some of the bodies are buried.

We need to keep our sugar industry and allow a reasonable amount of imports. Self-sufficiency in food!!
i disagree. we need to have a strategic capability. that is all. how quick can the corn to ethanol growers convert to actual food, if necessary?
