One thing you and a lot of other people are forgetting. When the people who run the country wealthy lib gentries and country club GOPE types do not have to pay much taxes then they will not see any problem in spending. It is when they feel the tax bite that they begin to think high taxes are not good.

Free trade, etc. sounds great on paper. In practice, we have been taken for suckers by virtually every foreign nation. A few tariffs might not be too bad, because they will force foreigners to realize that the US is serious.
Oh, and big companies making huge fortunes in the US damned well ought to pay some reasonable amount of taxes here - and not be able to screw around with the situs of intellectual property to save billions in taxes. Eff them, they are trying to totally starve the middle class to enrich a few shareholders. SOMETIMES you have to get your nose out of the theoretical economics books and look around at what really happens.

the United State pays taxes, in the form of tariffs, to China and Mexico right now in the current trade agreements? You think that’s good????
While at the very same time...., the United States does not charge them any taxes.
You think it’s good when China manipulates their currency in order to increase their exports to us? While at the very same time it makes it even hard for the United States to export to China. You think that is good too?
Oh and we STILL PAY TAXES to China and Mexico on top of the ILLEGALLY MANIPULATED currency? And you think THAT IS GREAT! WHAT A DEAL!
You must think its great too that American Companies are encouraged to leave the United States by the Feds, move to China, Mexico or they will be punished in the form of regulations (like the Coal industry) if they don’t fire American workers for SLAVE LABOR OVERSEAS and move out of the country?
But you think it’s good for the United States loses jobs, and bring more government regulation jobs, to run the remaining companies our, and bring in more minimum wage fast food jobs?

The only way you have “free” trade is ONLY when everyone is playing by the same rules. Anything else is a RIGGED trade deal.
Just like the game of Poker. Everyone plays by the same rules. You can not win a rigged poker game. Where one side gets away with murder and the other side is punished to the max.

No, here is what I think. Protectionism stinks. It isn’t conservative, it breeds horrendous inefficiency (see the big 3 automakers of the 70’s cranking out garbage), and it isn’t the answer to making America more competitive.
You want to make America the world’s engine of economic growth and job creation, you CUT taxes, slash regulation, continue the advance of right to work legislation, etc.
What Trump is spouting is NOT at all conservative. Tariffs, higher taxes, etc, are the stuff that makes unions smile and guys like Bernie Sanders think Trump is stealing his campaign issues.
Left to some of the protectionists on this forum we’d still be driving the trash GM, Chrysler and Ford were churning out. The only reason their product got better is because of competition.
Trump is not a conservative. Period. Populist protectionism is NOT conservatism.
Maybe it is because every time they get tax cuts they move more jobs off shore then complain again about taxes.
You can not turn back to the clock to the post WW2 days where no one could compete with the US. Those days are gone. Low skilled work is going to go elsewhere.
Many companies that have the kind of high(er) paying jobs Americans would even want consider more than just wages. They consider infrastructure, tax rates, regulation, union power, etc.
The key is to LOWER taxes, reduce regulation, weaken the power of leftist labor unions, and otherwise make America more attractive to business when they compare setting up shop here versus elsewhere.
All the sudden this forum is filled with Trumpsters defending many of his positions which are decidedly NOT conservative. Trump is a populist protectionist, not an ideological conservative. His blather that all our problems are because of Mexico, China, Japan, etc, is flat out stupid and utterly wrong.
Cut taxes, cut regulation, weaken leftist labor unions (right to work), offer incentives for business to relocate here (or not leave). Those are the ways to make this country more competitive.
It’s not just the taxes... It’s the Slave Labor wage... It’s the regulations too.

Our Republic since its inception had tariffs in it all the way up until 1996.
Every president from George Washington up to Bill Clinton had tariffs. We were the leaders of the free world and became a Super Power.
So according to you all the previous Presidents were all “Protectionist” and this was bad for the United States. In other words the United States was on the wrong path from 1787 to 1996?

Oh I know according to the Clinton’s, the Bush’s and Obama that is the case. According to these guys every U.S. President from George Washington down.... up to Bill Clinton were all wrong on Tariffs.

You do know that Reagan told Japan and European car companies they can avoid tariffs if you build your car plants here in the United States. Reagan used tariffs as advantage to bring jobs to the United States. Guess what Toyotta, BMW, etc... all came here.
Free trade is only good IF everyone is playing by the same rules. Right now here are the facts.
1) The United States STILL PAYS TARIFFS while at the very same time China and Mexico do not. How is that not rigged?
2) China can manipulate currency with no type of punishment. How is that not rigged?
3) China, Mexico and the rest of the world are exempt from federal regulations while U.S. companies have to comply ONLY in the United States. How is that not rigged?
4) United States companies pay a higher capital gains in order to encourage them to leave the United States. That way we can import lower prices. How is that not rigged?
5) We import Engineers from China and India to replace American workers at lower cost. Google what Disney did recently to their I.T. department. The American workers had to train their foreign replacements , here in the United States for 1/3 the cost. While at the same time we export Engineer students from M.I.T., Georgia Tech, etc... to places like China and India. How is that not rigged?
6) In addition we now have open borders(never done before until this year, and allow illegal immigrants to welfare, free housing, free health care and free education. No other country in the world does this except us. This is being done in order to drive wages down. How is that not rigged?
This is what guys like Obama, the Bush’s and the Clinton’s think is great for America.

No, but it will likely keep them from spending so much money in the first place. The more you have to pay for big government then the less likely you are to want to spend the money. Thirty some years ago when the highest tax rate was 90% I never heard of a “big government conservative”. If they are going to, “work with the Democrats to get thing done then damn it they deserve it. If they are going to flood the country with wet backs to get cheap labor even if they are going to build a democrat majority the they surely deserve to pay the taxes. It seems to me changing the direction of this country will lower our tax bills in the long term. Fecklessness,duplicity and treachery should be rewarded.
I used to agree with you on this subject 100%. I was in favor of lowering everybodies taxes. But when they try to tear down all of our countries immigration enforcement. I felt like the faithful wife who found out her husband was cheating. It meant divorce and that is the way I feel now too.
If they sell out then they should shell out. And let us not forget about the corporate media. Do we have any bigger enemy? Don’t mak me go on and on!
First, you cannot export your wealth without running out of it.
A second, and more important point, is that you are assuming trade is fair. It is not. Other countries, including good allies, play games with us all the time. For example, I can name Asian countries that grossly limit our imports because they declare all US products to be unsafe.
The only way to deal with that is to adjust tariffs until trade evens out.

How many conservatives have ever praised Unions? Not me, at least. Regulations? I actually think workers get what workers get, it’s up to them to be smart enough to find a legit employer or not (freedom).
Yes. We can turn back the clock. If only by way of policy. The only reason the rest of the world can compete is because of relaxed American Foreign policy.
Sanctions on countries that use slave labor? Sanctions on countries that exploit human rights? Sanctions... If only for the sake of America. That’s not liberal either, it’s American. Nothing wrong with killing your opponents business by way of jockeying for position.
I think that a balanced budget is more important than tax cuts, so if hedge fund managers don't get a tax cut so that the middle class can get one, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it.
