In addition to your excellent response, I would add that it is probably simplistic to use the term ‘crony’ to describe any businessman who has donated to a politician in expectation of some personal benefit. I’m sure there are various shades of motivation.
Some probably donate just to insure they remain in the good graces of the politicians who hold power, seeking nothing more than to protect their businesses interests from arbitrary government regulation, etc., just like paying protection money to the mob. Others more actively seek an improvement in their business fortunes by partnering with lawmakers to create unfair conditions that benefit themselves at the expense of their competitors and the taxpayers.

At this point in time the following is enough for me!
Trump believes a secure border is critical for both security and prosperity in America. He wants to build a wall to stop illegals from entering and help put controls on immigration. (And he says he’ll get Mexico to pay for the wall, which many have scoffed at, but given his business successes I wouldn’t put it past him.) He also wants to enforce our immigration laws and provide no path to citizenship for illegals other than that which is currently included in the law.
You are right. But I wouldn’t use the word “purist”. These guys have mismanaged us into the current state of affairs. Looking for the perfect candidate they ended up giving us the worst.
It’s time to look for results, not ideology.

Your second paragraph is a variation of “The Devil made me do it”
It is against the law for a politician to accept money for special treatment. It is not against the law for a person to donate money to a candidate or an office holder in the hopes he will support legislation favorable to him as a businessman.

We're not all in based on his "new conservative persona; we're all in based on the belief he's addressing the right problems. The conservative persona is just to keep from offending us into not letting him fix them.
If he runs third party it will be because the Guppies cheated him out of the nomination. No one else is even close to Trump.
