The secretary of the interior has the legal authority to change the name if the Board of Geographic Names does not act in a “reasonable time.” The administration contends that, since the state of Alaska first requested the name change 40 years ago and the board hasn’t issued a ruling yet, it hasn’t acted in a timely manner.
