THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Sonata for Piano & Cello in D, Op. 102/2

In this sonata, the lines between movements are less blurred, and Beethoven goes into full contrapuntal mode for his finale.

The first movement is in 4/4 and marked “allegro con brio,” which is Lou’s favorite marking. It’s also very short, which goes to show just how Lou’s musical thought had compacted in this phase of his compositional life. The second subject is in A Major, and the exposition is repeated. A tiny development spends much of its time in C and E-flat before recapping in D with both subjects in that key. The coda is a bit relaxed until it sprints for the finish line.

This time we have a full slow movement in 2/4 marked “adagio con molto sentimento d’affetto.” It’s the Italian way of saying, “Bring out your handkerchiefs.” It sounds like an aria from a tragic opera of the previous century, and parts of it prophesy Schubert. It starts by waffling between F Major and A minor, but turns sweetly into D Major. At the end of the middle section there is the four note figure that Max Steiner was to turn into the main theme from “Gone With the Wind.” It returns to the opening panel, but Lou re-composes it with dotted notes. A transition passage in E-flat brings it without pause into...

A finale in D Major marked “allegro fugato” in 3/4 time. Beethoven believed that if a composer were to revive the old classical form of the fugue, he needed to step away from the models of Bach and Handel and add some of his own poetry. This is a harbinger of the fugues that Beethoven was to write in the works of his late period.
