It’s not just Tennessee. We’re dealing with it in Utah, too.
But they don’t tell you in the memo about the catch-22, which is that most transgenders don’t want to self-disclose, they want everyone to already know that even though the class roll says Bruce (legal name), and the person answers in a baritone voice and has an adam’s apple bigger than a baseball, they prefer to be called Sheila and “she”. So, unless you have access to certain parts of the person’s file, how are you supposed to know what their preferred name and gender are, unless you A) ask, and risk offending them; or B) take a guess, and risk getting it wrong and talking to OEO.
