Global sea levels climbed 3 inches since 1992, NASA research shows

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fl. (Reuters) - Sea levels worldwide rose an average of nearly 3 inches (8 cm) since 1992, the result of warming waters and melting ice, a panel of NASA scientists said on Wednesday.

In 2013, a United Nations panel predicted sea levels would rise from 1 to 3 feet (0.3 to 0.9 meters) by the end of the century. The new research shows that sea level rise most likely will be at the high end of that range, said University of Colorado geophysicist Steve Nerem.

Sea levels are rising faster than they did 50 years ago and “it’s very likely to get worse in the future,” Nerem said.

The changes are not uniform. Some areas showed sea levels rising more than 9 inches (25 cm) and other regions, such as along the U.S. West Coast, actually falling, according to an analysis of 23 years of satellite data.

If I’ve done my math right, if ALL of the water trapped in on land glaciers were to melt (I find that number to be 46,000 cubic miles) the oceans, which have a total area of 139.4 million square miles, would rise 21”; less than 2 meters.

From the article the UN is predicting that by the end of the century the ocean level will have risen 3 meters. That’s a lot of water to be created out of nothing.

Maybe my numbers are wrong. Or maybe someone is lying.

Just spent a week on the north shore of Long Island where I grew up

If the shore line has gone up one fraction of an inch, you’d have to show me where

I saw that episode.

A guy named Gilligan keeps move the stick they use to measure the ocean rising.

...Or it might be his unlikable, less bright cousin Michael Mann...

How many square feet of new lands created during that time period?

I don't know- it's three inches, then six, possible nine- sound like someone’s trying to compensate for something.....

The water is not rising or falling. The land is.

It might be eroding or plate tectonics might be pushing it up.

The latter is probably what is happening in Cali.

Years ago I would have assumed the authors took in to account the earth rotation and lunar gravity affects on sea levels, but that’s no longer possible. It’s not even assured that sea level measurements were made using a consistent unit of measure.

It’s tectonic plate movement, shifting blocks of crust around and about and up and down. Very simple, actually. Doesn’t have anything to do with climate change.

Hmmm....if I’m not mistaken, water is uniform - it will seek its own level - so how can it rise on the east coast and fall on the west?

The episode was funny...Gillian’s Island had gay men on it. Know why? If I was on an island with Ginger and Mary Ann, the island would not have just 5 passengers on it...
