Miami (AFP) - Sea levels are rising around the world, and the latest satellite data suggests that three feet (one meter) or more is unavoidable in the next 100-200 years, NASA scientists said Wednesday.
Ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting faster than ever, and oceans are warming and expanding much more rapidly than they have in years past.
Rising seas will have "profound impacts" around the world, said Michael Freilich, director of NASA's Earth Science Division.
"More than 150 million people, most of them in Asia, live within one meter of present sea level," he said.
Low-lying US states such as Florida are at risk of disappearing, as are some of the world's major cities such as Singapore and Tokyo.
"It may entirely eliminate some Pacific island nations," he said.

All we gotta do is pay more taxes and the gummint will fix it.
At the risk of sounding too practical I have to ask-if they are all in a hum about this-instead if yelling that the sky is falling-shouldn’t the National Aeronautics and SPACE Administration be putting their efforts-and OUR taxes-into finding a faster way for those people to get to Mars, and have their “Earth Science division” working on a way to make living there easier and more self-sustainable for those people?
They’ve already been to the moon, and landed rovers on Mars, so they ought to be able to manage that in 100 years or less...
If so, it’s geological. Adapt.
Sea levels began to rise 18k years ago at the end of the last glacial period. They have risen about 135 meters since then which is an average of 7.5 millimeters per year. That is an average of 750 mm per century (29.5 inches) which is far more than the average over the last century.
From 1880 to 2000 sea level rose about 20 cm or just under 8 inches. Far far less than the nearly 30 inches per century average over the last 18,000 years.
oh no seas are rising. It’s never happened before.... cept.

ancient cities now under water, among others.
George Strait got his “Ocean Front Property in Arizona” several years ago. Just a few more millennia to go.
So they have noticed an 18 thousand years and running trend. Fine work, boys.
I see 2012 playing a lot all over cable.. Who knows.. I’ll take a glacier dropping over an asteroid any day.. But that’s just me. ;-)
not sure..
Tides aside, could someone please explain to me how an ocean can rise in some places and fall in others? Arent we violating the laws of gravity to be making such claims?
If a modern civilization can't cope with a 3 foot rise in sea level over a TWO HUNDRED YEAR time frame, it doesn't deserve to survive.
But Seriesly.. Abberations in tidal variations are not normal.. JAAAA!
Shiest HapPPens!!
Solar scientists predict that the Earth will enter a "mini ice age" around 2030 due to decreased activity by the sun, which will bring with it frigid cold winters. The last time the Earth experienced a similar situation occurred between 1645 and 1715.

I hope that Michael Freilich has provided an explanation of the assumptions, data, and methodology used to make such a projection.
Could not falling sea levels also have a profound effect?
Certainly when temperatures were rising there was more melting of ice sheets, but what has been going on over the last ten years? What assumptions about global warming do you have to make for the sea level to rise one foot?
Does recent global (satellite) data on the Earth's temperature support such a claim? What are the sources and history of global surface temperature and ice growth and melting?
Democrat rep Hank Johnson believes it is a very real possibility...
Must see YouTube video! (no joke, he was dead serious!)
March 2010:
Democrat Representative Hank Johnson fears Guam may tip over and "capsize" due to overpopulation!
Check out the reaction of the military official he was questioning!
Between their muslim outreach directive and begging the Russians for rides to the Space Station how does NASA find time for this political bullshit?
Why doesn’t NASA concentrate on going to Mars and beyond and forget this “climate change” bullcrap.
Because we've been to Mars already!
...at least according to democrat Sheila Jackass Lee...

On a visit to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2005, Jackson Lee made embarrassing news by asking if the Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the flag planted there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong.[2]
Prior to the 110th Congress, Jackson Lee served on the House Science Committee and on the Subcommittee that oversees space policy and NASA.
