5 Ways Trump Just Crossed the Scariest Line of All (He's becoming Presidential)
huffingtonpost.com ^ | Jonathan Funke

This past week, Donald Trump just did his most outrageous thing yet: he started being less outrageous. It's time to acknowledge he's too smart to risk flaming out. On the contrary, like any other pol, he'll reposition as needed to stay viable as the campaign trail winds on.

Here are five ways he's crossed the line into conventional-candidate territory:

1. He's got an electoral strategy. Phase I was a national air war at cable-network expense; Phase II means ground troops at the state level. Picking Alabama for his recent rally shows that, whatever happens in the Iowa and New Hampshire beta tests, Trump is gearing up to play to his strengths once the race goes geographic.

2. He's tamping down the rhetoric. Gone is broad-brushing Mexicans as "rapists"; these days on "Face the Nation," he singles out "tough dudes" in urban Latin gangs that he says are the real problem in Baltimore, St. Louis and beyond. He's now trumpeting the "very big, very beautiful gate" smack dab he'll put in the middle of his Mexico-financed wall, to let "the good ones" back in who have lived here for "10, 15, 20 years."

3. He's playing nicer with Republicans. "I have nothing against Jeb Bush, I think he's a very nice person," he told George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. On Scott Walker: "He's a nice man...I like him very much." The gloves may have been off in the debates, but he took care not to throw them away altogether.

For some reason I seem to recall hearing he’s dead? I’m not sure. He wore the “Chicken George won’t debate” chicken costume way back in ‘92. Maybe next year he’ll have a “Gringo Trump hates Mexicans” sign.

I’ve wondered at times if some of Biden’s BS isn’t on purpose.

It is always nice to see the HuffPost watching out for the best interests of Trump.

Wasn’t all the Trump stuff supposed to be in the entertainment section?

Trump is too big to be pushed around.

I noticed yesterday in the Press Conference that Trump had a decidedly Presidential air. It looks good on him.

Bottom line, they can’t resist covering him ... their “Entertainment” section has probably never had so many readers. It also has the effect of setting him apart from all the rest of the wanna-be candidates who are lumped together on the news pages & takes attention away from them. So, Huffpo is actually helping Trump out.

So is HuffPo still banishing Trump to the entertainment section, or is he back in the political section?

He’s still in Entertainment, but that won’t be for long.

I noticed this a little at the Alabama speech and bigtime last night. He is really modulating, becoming more polished and conversational. Its all good.

As some folks have said here on FR, he has used an Art of War Strategy for many years in his business.

"If you are coming, makes it seem you are going away. If you are small, appear large. If you are weak, appear to be strong."

What I might call the rule of opposites.

He appears to be a clown and, perhaps, even not so smart because it confounds his enemies.

When his opponents finally begin to catch on, it's too late...he's won.

This is not to say that he is not an original article...he most certainly is.

But he is a fighter and he wants to win.

Americans get Trump, but his enemies are completely flummoxed.

The bombastic Trump is just for show. In private I’ll bet he is very thoughtful and deliberate.

Meanwhile Trump makes the others look like the new version of mediocrity they are. Except for one or two like Cruz and he’s having a hard time.

I think you are exactly right. He is super intelligent. I’ve read five of his books and they give insight into him that doesn’t necessarily come through as he campaigns.

If you had to recommend just one of his books which would it be?

Read his latest, Time To Get Tough. The revised version just came out in paperback. It is hard to choose just one, but that one gives the most insight into what he wants to do for the country.

Other than Trump, himself, none of us really knows where he will fall on the big conservative issues if he is elected POTUS. But... (and you knew that was coming), he is running his campaign like an A+ business, and if he runs the Country with the same business sense, then he will be a better president than anyone in the field from either party, except perhaps, Ted Cruz, who I fear is unelectable.

Although I am a big fan of Ted Cruz, my fear is that a lot of people from both parties despise the smartest guy in the room, even when they know he is right on all the big issues. Ted is a true conservative intellectual who needs to grab and hold the attention of the bread and butter, core Republicans, as well as the Reagan Democrats, in order to win. Cruz is not going to do that by giving the equivilent of a grad school lecture to an audience who cares more about honest, common-sense leadership, than raising money for the next campaign. Indeed, some of my friends at the pub view Cruz as a smarter, but equally annoying GOP version of Al Gore. I am pumping Cruz at every oppurtuniy, but if he doesn't have the votes, I will take my chances with Trump over anyone else in the race.

That’d be awesome. Searches don’t bring up much of anything on him.

Sorry, but I enjoy being the resident conservative here.

Typical liberal.

State your opinion as if it were a fact - over and over and over ...

Liberalism 101 ... you got a 4.0

You're a fake, phony, fraud.
