Yeah. They do try to have it both ways, blindly thinking that they is the Christian way. It is not. You cannot negotiate a position with those who hate God’s law. Cannot be done. Trying will 100% of the time lead to compromise.

The SBC suffers from the same phenom as the rest of the world: weak leaders. The only part of the world with strong leaders is the criminally insane portion (ISIS, Al Queda, Boko Haram, etc).

You make an excellent point: weak leadership. I don’t think we would recognize a strong leader nowadays because in many respects, he would appear, by our perverted modern standards, to be “implacable” and “harsh.” But harshness can be an essential characteristic of a leader. The prophets of God certainly were.
