Thats dodging a question or being exposed as a liar. There's no other explanation, other than he can't remember ANYTHING he read in the Bible. Or he's too smart to get caught up into a question that's a "gotcha" question.
So he says "Adam and Eve". They say "Why". He explains. They nitpick and twist. And then all of a sudden the narrative is about what he doesn't or does know.
And so he does the smart thing..doesn't fall into the trap.
