Donald Trump holds a commanding lead among likely Republican primary voters in South Carolina, according to a new Monmouth University poll released Tuesday.

Three in 10 voters (30 percent) said that Trump is their first choice, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 15 percent. Neither candidate has held elected office, and 61 percent of voters said they would prefer someone from outside of Washington to bring a new approach.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is further back, at 9 percent, followed by former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio at 6 percent, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 5 percent

...

Trump leads along ideological lines as well, winning among those who described themselves very conservative (33 percent), somewhat conservative (31 percent) and moderate to liberal voters (23 percent). Trump also outpolled Carson 33 percent to 18 percent among evangelicals. He also won over more tea party and non-tea party voters, besting Carson and Bush, respectively.

Trump received a solid favorability rating of 58 percent to just 28 percent unfavorable

Yeb is in huge trouble. Another story today says he’s cutting campaign costs.

I saw an article saying that the VA and NC republicans are trying to rule that no candidate will be put on primary ballot that won’t vow to endorse the republican nominee.

They want Trump to sign a "Loyalty Oath".

I say he should tell them, "You first - sign a loyalty oath to the People, the Constitution, and to Conservative Principles - then I might consider your un-Constitutional demands to thwart the will of the People, the Constitution, and Conservative Principles - NOT!"

This is conservative South Carolina ... which Newt handily won in 2012. This should be Cruz Country. And yet, there's Trump at the top like it's Florida.

And I'm sorry, but I don't get the Dr. Ben Carson appeal either as POTUS. A great accomplished guy, but not POTUS to lead a conservative movement.

N.C. GOP officials may try to keep Donald Trump out of the primary.

If TX doesn’t go for Trump, they will go for Cruz. I don’t think TX is a problem. FL is a different issue. You may be correct about FL.

That would result in Trump running 3rd party for sure. And I would support him in that decision even though I dont support him in the primaries.

Cruz at five percent is the main issue to me, here

I was very passionate about Cruz in the beginning. Now I am supporting either he or Trump.

Cruz is a brilliant debater and very bright on many issues.

However, he and his advisors are quite stupid when it comes to understanding the frustrations of American citizens.

I have been astounded that he has not been able to see that there is red-hot anger over this illegal alien invasion.

He could have pivoted early on and staked a position to the right of Donald, but he didn't.

Second, Cruz has given mixed signals recently on the difficulty of stopping birthright citizenship. Since he is a Constitutional expect I find it quite disturbing his vagueness. Mark Levin explained it quite clearly.

Cruz missed his opportunity by playing it too safe. We just don’t have enough time left to play the nice-nice establishment game. Not that he’s “establishment” but chipping away at the problem isn’t enough anymore.

Until relatively recently (recent decades) I would never have questioned it myself. I give props to Trump for raising the issue, its been almost an untouchable assumption until now, and I especially give credit to Mark Levin for his philosophical clarity on the subject.

Cruz has been quite firm on the border but like most politicians, if they are firm on the border they try to take the sting out by promoting *legal* immigration, suggesting we make it easier, suggesting we increase the quotas, and so forth. It has taken a Trump to actually question the underlying assumptions. And as you say, the sentiment is white-hot on the subject and people have been wanting someone to actually be on their side.

I love Cruz. He is right on almost everything, and until Trump got in the race he was the most out-spoken guy running. Trump is encouraging everyone out there to go bold or go home, go even bolder, and is showing them how its done. Cruz is still the better man, but Trump gets it out over the media noise machine. People who aren't politically engaged don't get Cruz, but they get Trump.

Well stated. If we could somehow merge them into one we would have an unstoppable candidate.

I thank Trump for bringing the issues of this illegal invasion and the building of the wall to the front.

In a tweet this morning, Trump, in a jab to Yeb, reiterated that he wants a Wall built, not just a simple fence. If he is serious then that is good. Trump has successfully moved forward against some of the toughest zoning boards in America.

If Trump is President he wont allow leftist parasites in the EPA shove environmental roadblocks into the mix in an effort to stop the Wall.
